will be a Relentless Pursuit Of Truth
and transparency and we will not stop
until the until the American people have
the answers they deserve we will cut
through the bureaucracy challenge the
stonewalling and ensure that the
American people finally get the truth
that they have been denied for too
long if we are to endure and Thrive as a
nation we must restore trust trust
through
transparency the American people must be
trusted to think for themselves to form
their own judgments from the truth that
they are entitled to know we've been
treated like children for too long and
kept in the dark by those we elected to
serve serve us it is my solemn duty to
begin mending this trust to form a new
relationship between the government and
the Govern let us embark on this journey
together towards a government that does
not serve but one that enlightens that
does not just serve but one that
enlightens trust through transparency
that begins now without further Ado we'd
like to open it up for questions as I'm
sure many of you have those hands
up
Even though Elon seems to be having a coup at least it seems to be happening in the open rather than being a big secret. Same with what Trump has been up to and the whole Project 2025 plans. And now it is very clear that the tech billionaires are getting treated very favourably and the maga supporters are getting virtually nothing. Well they got plastic drinking straws back. Everyone knows that Elon's power was due to his $280m contribution in the election and his control of X, etc. Elon is openly pro-right wing/facist, etc.

Maybe Trump's supporters from QAnon were conspiracy nuts so they'd really appreciate those secrets being declassified...

Near the end they talked about whistle-blowers getting protection.

Well I welcome this plan - which is bipartisan.

The Americans have a reputation already for poor secrecy, both OpSec and diplomatic, amongst her five eyes allies.

MI5 have long been of the opinion that telling the Americans something is equivalent to telling Moscow and Beijing (although of course they have their own ignoble history of harbouring spies in their midst).

I am generally in favour of minimising secrecy, and classifying only those things that need to be kept from our enemies. But the USA further relaxing security seems like it could be a poor decision. It's one thing for a spy to pass secrets undetected; It's quite another for the government to decide to publish.

The UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand are all perhaps a bit too secretive; The US seems to be a bit too open.

Secrecy demands that more stuff be kept secret than just the obvious; You need to keep apparently harmless information secret, if it gives away clues to things that are far from harmless.

Even declassifying apparently trivial stuff can give enemies hints about what is being kept secret - if you list (for example) all the airbases that don't host nuclear weapons, then the enemy has a far shorter list to work through to determine which airbases do host nukes.

Loose lips sink ships.

So in the name of transparency they're going to release the Epstein Files? Good to know.

@bilby
Btw I think this is a really good example of important secrecy

Though it was declassified after a few decades

I don't watch video online.

What does it say?
It’s an excerpt of The Imitation Game movie. They kept the cracking of Enigma a secret and it allowed them to win the war a lot earlier including Normandy, Stalingrad, etc.

Ah, OK.

As usual with movies, the reality is far more complex.

The British kept the cracking of Enigma secret until the 1970s (under the "30 year rule", almost nothing from the war years was declassified until 1969-75), with large parts of the work not declassified until the 1990s, and some remaining classified even today.

During the first couple of decades after WWII, the British Foreign Office even encouraged many developing nations to use the "unbreakable" Enigma for their diplomatic codes, allowing Britain to eavesdrop on colonies that were planning to break away from the Empire, often with Soviet assistance.

The GCCS work at Bletchley covered far more than just Enigma, and their successors at GCHQ in Cheltenham are almost certainly likewise able to decrypt a lot of stuff that is considered by its users to be impenetrable. Of course, it would be madness to tell anyone what codes can and cannot be broken. Such information has always been classified at the highest possible level.
