In reviewing history over long periods, it almost always seems to be that massive changes often happen towards the latter half of the century. Take the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The US revolution of 1776. The French Revolution of 1792. The US Civil War of the 1860's. The Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. The Russian Revolution of 1991. The technological surge of the last half of the 20th century. And speaking of technology, it was the last half of the 19th century that saw the invention of the light bulb, telephone, automobile and almost the airplane.
It seems that liberal and progressive ideas seem to do well at the end of such eras, and conservative ideas seem to predominate in the early part of the century. Although there are obvious exceptions and that's a broad generalization. But in the early part of centuries we've seen obvious retrenchment such as the establishment of Jim Crow in the early 20th century, the Napoleonic wars and re-establishment of Monarchy in France in the early 1800's. In the 20th century we've had horrible wars in the early part, and that pattern has somewhat happened again in the 21st - albeit not nearly as bad.
The election on Tuesday seems to confirm this retrenchment too. I think that's what we're experiencing. I wish I could live long enough to see the progressive surge at the end of this century. But I hope it will come.
