A story told by Norman Mailer:
Norman came back from WW2 and wrote the Naked and the Dead, a story about a combat team fighting the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. The dialogue was realistic and every sentence contained the word "fuck" in some form or another. Mailer's editor sat down with him and said the book couldn't be published as it was. Just too many fucks. The editor suggested "fug", as in, "Fug you, you fugging motherfugger." Norman said, "Change it to strawberry shortcake, if it gets my book published."
The change was made and the book became a hot best seller.
A few months later, Mailer is at a party given in his honor by the publisher. The actress Tallulah Bankhead is there and when introduced to Mailer, says, "Oh, you're the young man who doesn't know how to spell Fuck."
