Going to my first Cubs game of this season tomorrow. Very excited, despite expecting not to like the modernization they did to Wrigley field (the electronic scoreboards and piped in music system).
It is crazy how good they are. They will clinch with 2 weeks left in the season, and likely clinch the #1 seed by 5-8 games. I have watched almost every game on TV this year, and they have certainly never been near this good in my years as a fan. That said, I don't have the delusions of many Cubs fans. Their odds of winning it all is still only about 20%, and some of the things that make them so awesome now don't matter much in the post-season, such as having 4th and 5th pitchers in the rotation that are as good as most teams #1 and #2. You can get away with only 3 great starters in October. Also, their relief pitching in the 7th and 8th is still very unreliable, and while they score more than anyone, they also have the lowest batting avg with men in scoring position than most other playoff teams. If they don't win, it will likely be due to failing to get a big enough lead by leaving men on base, then giving up runs in the late innings.
Hopefully the Giants, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Mets will beat the crap out of each other vying for playoff spots and make Cubs first round easier. Bears are going to be unwatchably sucktastic, so we need good Cubs postseason to get through the winter.
