I feel sorry for professed Christians who support this President.

They have a profound and fundamental spiritual problem: their God is too small.

They passionately worship a deity made in their own image: white, American, Republican, male—and perpetually terrified of just about everything: Muslims, immigrants, gay children, Special Counsel reports, mandalas, Harry Potter, Starbuck holiday cups, yoga, wind turbines, Science—everything.
Their God is so laughably minuscule, so fully neutered of power, so completely devoid of functioning vertebrae that “He” cannot protect them from the encroaching monsters they are certain lurk around every corner to overwhelm them.

I don't think their God is all that involved with the world at the end of the day; they believe in big flashy miracles and life-changing events, but they don't see God in others or expect to emulate Christ in their own actions. The supernatural pokes through into this world sometimes, but the basic nature of said world is cruel and hierarchical, and cynical realism drives their political life. God is not going to save the poor, the disenfranchised, the exiles, they are just going to have to wander forever... ideally somewhere else, fenced off from us. On the other side of the fence. All WE can do is protect our own and hope that God at least stays on our side even if he seldom helps directly. A distant monarch that must be appeased but whose teachings are not relevant to the governance of nations, only superficial observation of rules and strictures. So it makes sense for instance to do obeisance to a "Cyrus" whose morality they know to be in opposition to their own, but who can function as a strong man to protect them from their enemies while God is out to lunch. They are much closer to Deism than they themselves realize.

Anyone who doesn't recognize that MAGA is a front for white nationalism is engaging in accidental or intentional naivete.
