Our brains are wonderful things. It seems to take multiple incidents, file them away, and then create generalized impressions. I have tried to boil them down into two states. Safe and Not Safe. Or in our modern world, Fear or Trust. When we come across something, our brain brings up one of these general impressions to guide our actions. Sometimes it attaches a specific memory, other times, especially when you age, you just get the impression.

Whether it is your cousin, your brother in law, members of the opposite sex, an entire religion or political party, once something moves to the Fear or Not Trust category, it seems it requires conscious effort to move it back to the Trust category.

Can you follow a leader you fear but don't trust? Can you trust someone you fear? Can you trust someone who fears YOU?

We can follow a leader that we hate, fear and mistrust... if the payoff for taking that action is perceived to be sufficient compensation for your effort. A simple benefit to cost ratio. We do cost to benefit analysis with practically every action we take.
