Many right-wingers seem to emotionally believe that soldiers are vigilantes, when they are actually government employees, a class of people that they normally consider overpaid lazy bums.
The armed forces match some unflattering stereotypes of socialism, like being under government command and everybody dressing alike.
But military protection, and also police protection, is provided in socialist fashion, free at the point of service. No having to pay up front or haggling with one's insurance company, no dependence on which employer one has, never being "out of network", etc.
