Brett Favre questioned by FBI in Mississippi welfare scandal

NFL legend Brett Favre was questioned by the FBI in a scandal of misappropriated welfare funds in Mississippi.

The state of Mississippi gave Favre $1.1 million in 2017 and 2018 to deliver speeches. Not only did the Hall of Fame quarterback not give them, but the money was drawn from federal welfare funds.

I know what you're wondering. Yes, he voted for Trump.

We can't blame the whole thing on Favre, though, just the not-working part, getting money for nothing. Taking it from welfare funds, well, that's the fault of Big Gubmint. That means Democrats, right? Wait, what? This happened in Mississippi where everyone is conservative?

Welp, never mind.

There are also corporate welfare queens - those that pay little or no taxes and get government handouts - Amazon to name one.

What was Favre going to say that was worth that kind of money? "I know how to throw a funny shaped ball better than most people."?

Pork barrel politics generally refers to govt spending by politicians soley to gain favor by their constituents usually with formal appropriation.

Paying Favre to speak is political image building. Favre undoubtedly makes large political contributions. The fact he never gave speeches is the old routine corruption. I expect the usual corruption was we give him 1 million and he givese it back in campaign contributions. My guess.

With exceptions pro athletes are not the brightest bulbs on the tree. A few years back there was a medical insurance scam by NBA of NFL plaers.

.

Scholars use it as a technical term regarding legislative control of local appropriations.[2][3] In election campaigns, the term is used in derogatory fashion to attack opponents.

Typically, "pork" involves national funding for government programs whose economic or service benefits are concentrated in a particular area but whose costs are spread among all taxpayers. Public works projects, certain national defense spending projects, and agricultural subsidies are the most commonly cited examples.

Citizens Against Government Waste[4] outlines seven criteria by which spending in the United States can be classified as "pork":

  1. Requested by only one chamber of Congress
  2. Not specifically authorized
  3. Not competitively awarded
  4. Not requested by the President
  5. Greatly exceeds the President's budget request or the previous year's funding
  6. Not the subject of Congressional hearings
  7. Serves only a local or special interest.

The term pork barrel politics usually refers to spending which is intended to benefit constituents of a politician in return for their political support, either in the form of campaign contributions or votes.

Not quite everyone is "conservative." In fact Mississippi is 37.4% black, well ahead of second-place Louisiana's 32.1%. Mississippi VOTES for right-wing racists because the black vote is suppressed.

And that explains why Mississippi's leaders wanted to divert the (mostly federal) welfare money from the (largely black) needy to Brett Favre. — He's a white boy.

Favre insists he did nothing wrong.
article said:
Brett Favre denied wrongdoing in the Mississippi welfare scandal, speaking out for the first time on the controversy in a statement to Fox News Digital, saying, “I have done nothing wrong and it is past time to set the record straight.” He added that he has “been unjustly smeared in the media.”

While it is possible he has done nothing illegal... (post giving the money back, minus interest... and he'd have good enough lawyers) Favre... you did something wrong, very wrong, very unethical.
article said:
Favre received $1.1 million intended for welfare recipients in exchange for speeches and appearances the state auditor says he never made. And text messages included in court filings last month showed Favre was heavily involved in discussions that resulted in $5 million in welfare money going toward construction of a volleyball facility at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played volleyball. Favre later repaid the $1.1 million, but $228,000 in interest remains in dispute.
Yeah... that is wrong. How wrong? Favre seemed concerned about people knowing.

article said:
Davis immediately committed $4 million to the project, according to the motion.

“While Favre was pleased with MDHS’s $4 million commitment, he knew a state-of-the-art Volleyball Facility was likely to cost more,” the filing reads. “To make matters worse, USM apparently had a policy that any construction project on campus had to be funded fully, and the money deposited in USM’s account, before construction could begin.”

Favre thought of a way to get some extra cash to the program: even more money could flow through his company in exchange for the athlete cutting ads for the state’s welfare program. New said she thought it was a good idea.

“Was just thinking that here is the way to do it!!” Favre texted.
GREAT!!! You can pay me one million to do Welfare ads... and that money can then go to the facility. This is perfectly legit!

What an asshole. The more they have, the more they want. Favre has made over a hundred million dollars playing pro football, not counting the money from endorsements. He knows how poor his home state is, and he still can't set aside his greed to reach into the pot for more, knowing how bad it would look if this became public knowledge. What a scumbag.

It turns out there is a lot more to this story involving both non-profits and for-profits and other Republicans, including a professional wrestler and his wrestler sons. Ted DiBiase, turned Christian minister.

While clicking around on a completely unrelated matter, I encountered a Twitter post that reminded me of this thread.
Jackson is the capital and most populous city of the State of Mississippi.

Twitter thread said:
Mississippi told Jackson residents to shower with their mouths closed. The governor says: "Do not drink the water from the pipes."
180,000 people in the 80% Black city are getting brown tap water or none at all due to chronic underfunding.
"You don't even want to bathe in it."

Jackson has no reliable running water and residents are being told it is not safe to brush teeth.
Locals say: "This has been going on for years."
The city was already under a boil-water notice due to decades of underfunding: main water treatment pumps failed "some time ago."

Many Jackson residents already rely on bottled water to bathe, cook and drink due to chronic water disruptions and lead.
Even before the current crisis, officials warned tap water may cause digestive problems.
"We are tax paying citizens... we shouldn't have to live like this."

The EPA warned Mississippi in 2020 of "imminent" dangers for people drinking Jackson's tap water.
The 80% Black city has sought repairs since the 1940s.
Governor Reeves repeatedly refused requests for funding and the state only approved 6% of requested repair funds last year.

Of course there's no money to work on repairs to Jackson's water system — repairs needed for eighty years.
Mississippi needs to spend its limited resources helping indigents like Brett Favre.

There is an otherwise intelligent Infidel who claims to believe that it is plausible that a good-spirited well-informed American might support Trump or the GOP. Nonsense! It is impossible to vote for any Republican unless you are either (a) a hate-filled bigot, or (b) a blithering idiot.
