FWIW, I knew a child who was transgender and who attended local Catholic schools. The parents and most friends were Catholic and were quite as supportive (or not) as the general population. Now, I have 'Christian' relatives who would soundly condemn the child and the child's parents, upbringing, bring it all down to Catholicism being idolatry, etc.
I'm just saying that when people feel afraid or threatened by something or someone they don't understand, they tend to fall back and justify the fear and resulting ugliness on the religious or non-religious upbringing of the person who frightens them. Unless they can blame it on color or country of origin. I know plenty of good Christians who are accepting towards all, and plenty of gay/lesbian/queer people who are religious and who have found religious institutions that support them and that receive their support.
I understand that this is an atheist site and most who post here are atheist but I also don't believe that it is being religious that creates bigotry. After all, we have a number of people I consider to be bigots who are also atheists on this site. And I've been assured by some of these wonderful people that I am the bigot and racist.
It's just easy and cheap to blame someone's religious affiliation or lack thereof on any opinion they hold that you disagree with. And easy to call names instead of simply accepting that someone disagrees with your position.
I would like to think that we are better than that here.

The kid I knew, that I wrote about above? They knew that they were a different gender than the one they were assigned very early--as long as I knew them, which was pre-K. For a while, I just chalked it up to being strongly anti-sterotypical for the presumed gender: like being an extreme tomboy or being extremely interested in stereotypical girl things. But as time went on, and I came to know this child more (they were a friend of one of my children), I realized that this was not a phase or anything like being extremely tomboyish/girlish or even being gay: this child was very certain who they were and not in the least interested in being quiet about it to make other people more comfortable.
Later, in early adulthood, I learned they were undergoing gender reassignment surgery. For many reasons, not just gender identification, they had a difficult childhood and I wish them all the best in their life.
I also have qualms about people jumping too fast and too hard on the 'my kid is transgender' when their child is really just not interested or able to conform to stereotypical gendered behaviors. I think that sometimes that happens. Frankly, I find gender roles assigned by marketing and often reinforced by media and yes, schools and parents, are often cloying and confusing and are much more rigid than when I was a kid.
So to you I would say: WTF is wrong with society that we insist on forcing people into tiny, rigid boxes that we assign all their life choices, preferences, abilities, talents, tastes and ways of being, color coded pink and purple for girls, blue and camo for boys? Seriously, WTF is up with that? It's fucked up as hell and does no one any good except perhaps some toy manufacturers.

I would say that watching these gets to the heart of them trying to fit in with both what they are feeling and societal expectations. There seems to be *what appears to be overreaction* by them. But the issue is that the people who think that only rarely have to think about this stuff. They are always asked about it and people have visceral reactions to them. Now, what percentage of people reacting to them is because of society and what biological who knows. Maybe even in an ideal society 20% of the visceral reactions to trans people would still remain.
This is inherently funny stuff

Some of you may remember that I once stated that I had not made up my mind about my stance on transgenderism – but I also made it very clear that I was completely appalled by how those individuals are treated by some.
I am still considering my opinion on this. I particularly have great difficulty with children who say they are transgender since it is very well known that young people are not mentally or emotionally mature enough to make firm, well considered decisions on life matters. This is the reason that we have juvenile courts instead of trying juvenile offenders as adults for all legal offenses, and also why children are not legally able to sign contracts.
That being said, those parents are showing the worst of human characteristics and should be held accountable. There is NO good reason for that kind of vicious attack on a child. Period. An adult should have the good sense to not lower themselves to a level which puts them on a par with the worst of criminals and terrorists. I am not saying that they do not have the right to their opinions but when they show this type of behavior in public, they are acting in a manner not befitting any decent human being.
And I agree with Toni – you see this type of behavior on all sides of the faith spectrum. It has nothing to do with faith; it has to do with basic human decency.

That phrase, sexualizing children, as a clarion call of outrageous disgust, usually refers to sexual relations, not gender identity.
We dress our kids in boys clothes and girls clothes right from the start, and no one thinks twice about it. Let the KID state an opinion on tge matter, though, and you see something wrong? What's wrong, exactly?
