Meanwhile in... the madness that is the world today, Trump's solution to the growing unemployment problem caused by his inabiilty to recognize problems of people that aren't him?

Don't disclose it.

The Trump administration is asking state labor officials to delay releasing the precise number of unemployment claims they are fielding, an indication of how uneasy policymakers are about further roiling a stock market already plunging in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

In an email sent Wednesday, the Labor Department instructed state officials to only “provide information using generalities to describe claims levels (very high, large increase)” until the department releases the total number of national claims next Thursday.

The email, which was shared with The New York Times, noted that the reports were monitored closely by financial markets and should therefore remain embargoed. “States should not provide numeric values to the public,” wrote Gay Gilbert, the administrator of the department’s Office of Employment Insurance.
It's an idea so crazy, it has to work. If we just reroute the unemployment numbers through the plasma conduits and use the deflector shield to generate an unemployment burst, this will make the problem go away and fix the rip in the space time continuum.

And GOP led Ohio is on board.

Husted said during a Monday’s daily briefing at the Ohio Statehouse that the state would no longer provide updates on on unemployment claims, citing guidance from the Trump Administration. An ODJFS spokesman later clarified that the state will release its weekly unemployment claims update on Thursday, when nationwide data is released.

“We’ve been asked by the U.S. Department of Labor not to release our numbers on unemployment, so we’re following that guidance,” Husted said.
Of course, Ohio needed to follow up and say they would actually release them eventually, umm... after the Federal Government does... when people started asking questions.

I'll buy a beer for the first state official who uses the term "fucking huge".

Let's see...

  • mind blowing
  • fucking huge
  • Titanic Like
  • Ishtar-esque disastrous
  • Akin to the Alamo

Of course it will work! It is the same strategy for that virus thing that they told Trump about a few months ago. Don't talk about it, pretend it is nothing, and the problem will just go away on its own. What could go wrong?

Remember the Trump motto:
"What you don't know can't hurt me."

We're not getting accurate numbers on who has contracted the virus but when the bodies start piling up, we'll know.
We may not get accurate numbers on unemployment but when consumer spending continues to come in with lackluster numbers, we'll know.
Keep dancing, Donald. It's a long way to November.

There is no compelling reason for any state agency with a shred of integrity to accede to the Dept. of Labor's request. And postponing release for a couple of days provides no long lasting benefit to anyone and virtually no short run benefit. One wonders what jackass ordered this request.

BTW, the Secretary of Labor, Eugene Scalia, is a republican of Ohio and the son of Antonin Scalia.

The main effect will be increasing mistrust for anything this administration says. In particular by increasing uncertainty in the markets.

The weekly job numbers were released about 20 minutes ago. Over 3 million people applied for unemployment. I assume there are a lot more people who have recently lost their jobs but haven't yet applied for unemployment. Some expected the numbers to be higher. But, this is still the highest number recorded. The previous record was almost 700,000, back in 1982, if my memory is correct. I predict that next week's numbers will be worse.

3.283 million was the exact number.

Trumpeteers worship Donald. You might as well expect crazy christians to start mistrusting their jesus.

Trumpo could don a KKK outfit and start lighting crosses on the White House lawn and it wouldn't affect his popularity with his worshippers.
