Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump was startled Tuesday as he watched television coverage of his nominee for attorney general describing a warm relationship with the special counsel Robert Mueller in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Well, this is what happens when you don't vet people. Barr is the nominee for AG because he wrote a memo which was critical of the Mueller investigation - full stop. When he explained that memo to the Senate, it turned out to not be as critical as initially thought, but I doubt that anyone at the White House asked him for that two minute explanation to see if he were really on their side, so they ended up being surprised by what he actually thought.

Also, Barr seems like a relatively intelligent person. Given solely what is publicly known, I doubt it would be easy to find a reasonably intelligent person who'd be willing to jump on a grenade for Trump and abet his obstruction of justice when any attempt to suppress the report would simply result in it being "leaked" thirty seconds later.

I doubt it. Someone probably told him about that whole episode, but it was the 19-page "job application" that qualified him for the nomination. Trump doesn't do history.
