US: Air strike at Syrian troops unintentional

The US military said Saturday that the US-led Coalition launching deadly air strike at a Syrian troop air base was “unintentional” after Russia reported that the raids killed at least 62 Syrian soldiers.

“Coalition forces believed they were striking a Daesh fighting position,” US officials said in a statement,

At least 80 Syrian soldiers were killed in the air strike, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group said, citing a source at the airport.

Russian jets had been bombing in the same area at the same time, the Observatory said. The source at the airport said the air strike had paved the way for ISIS fighters to overrun the position at Jebel Tharda, the Observatory said.

A year or so this would not have been a mistake as the US didn't really care who took over from the Syrian regime as long as it removed it. However, I am not sure that the US has changed its position on this regardless of what it says officially. Maybe this was an error or maybe it was not.

I'm not so sure the US has just one position. I think that there are factions within the US administration with different goals. I think there are a lot of unlelected people who do whatever they like.
I don't believe all security and military people want this sort of stuff happening, but I doubt anyone will get fired over this. No one is in control.

What difference does it make? The soldiers are dead. And both sides in this are despicable.

Yes and we've seen historically what regime change has produced. I think the growing consensus is the solution is not to have gone into the ME in the first place.
