The talks are fluid, and President Trump has shown a willingness to veer between extremes in how he interacts with Beijing. But Trump said Sunday on Twitter that he wanted federal regulators to take the unusual step of relaxing penalties on ZTE, even though the Chinese company has been accused of illicitly shipping goods to North Korea and Iran.

With Trump’s tweet, some officials familiar with the ZTE issue believe a compromise is possible. “A mini-deal is in sight,” said a person familiar with the matter. “China gets relief for ZTE, and in exchange agrees to return to the status quo for U.S. agriculture,” easing tariffs and implementing other non-tariff remedies.

Wait... this is so that China lifts their new tariffs and restrictions on agriculture that they created after Trump put tariffs on Chinese products?

Nonetheless, the president’s shift on Sunday caught many advisers flat-footed because there had not been a broad agreement to change the administration’s position.

“This act appears to pull the rug out from under those in the administration trying to pressure China to restrain its industrial policies and better protect intellectual property,” said Scott Kennedy, an expert on business and China at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Of course. So Trump is doing the 'art of the deal', but doesn't realize that none of this is hidden or private, nor particularly effective.

The US: We are going to shutter ZTE for not fulfilling their requirements of spanking all involved with deals with North Korea and Iran.

A mere 72 hours after the Chinese government agreed to put a half-billion dollars into an Indonesian project that will personally enrich Donald Trump, the president ordered a bailout for a Chinese-government-owned cellphone maker.

Trump did not mention in that tweet or its follow-ups that on Thursday, the developer of a theme park resort outside of Jakarta had signed a deal to receive as much as $500 million in Chinese government loans, as well as another $500 million from Chinese banks. Trump’s family business, the Trump Organization, has a deal to license the Trump name to the resort, which includes a golf course and hotels.

Well, that probably explains that. This is clearly unethical. And should likely be completely illegal, but you know, the GOP is so far up the Russian Oligarchs' collective asses, there will be absolutely nothing coming from this.

What is truly fascinating about this pronouncement (if it actually represents what will happen, a big if with this POTUS), is that ZTE is being sanctioned by the US for doing business with IRAN and North Korea while we had sanctions against firms doing business with those countries.

The project includes Trump-branded hotels, residences and a golf course, as well as other hotel, shopping and residential developments.

The deal is the latest to raise questions about the extent of Trump’s financial exposure to Beijing.

It is completely not against the law. This isn't using the Office of the Presidency to make money. In fact, it is the least ever attempt to use the Office of Presidency to make money. The best ever attempt to avoid such a thing. Is there a trophy for this?
