Maybe a combination of things. Tribes tended to be small and inbreeding was rampant in earlier times. New genes were likely the result of the spoils of war/raids, in which case men would capture and dominate women.

That being said, as a self aware species, there is no excuse for men acting like lobotomized chimps in present society. That's one many things we have to put behind us.

Ha! You're right, that could be argued. However I hate the idea of people not being somewhat responsible for their actions.

Easy fix for the mother's baby, daddy's maybe issue is DNA test all newborns. If it turns out that he's not the father, he shouldn't be financially liable. She's free to sleep with whomever she wants but she doesn't get to trick/force effort/resources out of men who aren't the biological father. Legal adoption, as a stand alone process, would be the exception.
