Recall that in the leadup to the 2016 election, the Russians engaged in propaganda from bots and intel agents with the proximal goal of increasing divisiveness in US politics. They were hoping to destabilize the country and they did this from both sides--exciting BLM and exciting racists and other groups who dislike BLM. The ultimate goal of course was to make the US a failed state so that Russian hegemony could flourish under Putin and his crony oligarchs. They could then also take advantage financially and geo-politically of the failed US.

Instead of learning from this, it seems to just have gone down the memory hole. In terms of national security, it ought to have remained one of the biggest risks.

So, my question is this. Is it reasonable to just assume the Russians are no longer an active threat to our security? Is it unreasonable to extrapolate their past actions to current times in 2020? Let me put it another way. Why should we, practically speaking, reserve analysis of security risks to retrospective deductions based on evidence we can find after-the-fact as opposed to inferring what they may be doing right now?

Speaking of retrospective, this was back in March...

So, what are they going to do right up to Inauguration, most likely?

There are a lot of people who are making a game of finding Russian trolls online by repeated talking points and a few other methods.

They are doing as much as they can to destabilize democracies in Europe and America and from all indicators, they are being successful. It turns out to be relatively easy to stoke hatred among nazis and to generate backlash. Add in some leftist tropes and reactionary leftist stuff to create the illusion of something to hate for the on the fence types on the racist right and suddenly you get the end of cooperation and the disintegration of democratic institutions and presto, Gazprom gets to take over the world

The Russians are actively involved in the 2020 election. The 2020 election is already fucked, as may the remainder we have. Russia did pretty well here.

They are working with the American oligarchs. They have a common goal. They want central governments and multinational alliances out of the way so the handful of big multinational corporations that hold all the wealth can operate across borders without pesky things like paying state/local taxes or adhering to pollution controls or labor/safety laws. The Heartland Institute, Heritage Foundation, American Legislative Exchange Council, et al. are massive disinfo creators and spreaders.

Oh and it wasn't just the run up to 2016. They were making tracks in 2009 to 2012 with the Birther theory, DHS bullet hoarding theories, 911 truth;they even dabbled in chemtrails, anti vaccine, and some stupid GMO and herbicide 'theories'. The anti vaccine and gmo/herbide bullshit stuck with the conservative base so they ran they campaign in that direction.

They teamed up with Bannon and Natural News to push some Guiseppe Tritto covid disinformation. That push dates to around 12 August. Same old same old.
