I have never been in the military. I dont know if platoon was the right term.
Assuming this was the Army, a platoon is divided into smaller units called squads. You might have almost 50 people in a large platoon but in a serious wartime the number could be smaller with people dying etc, maybe down to 20 in WW2 Germany until replacements or maybe even organizationally they could have smaller teams for whatever reason. The squads would be quite a bit smaller, like 4-ish squads in a platoon. So, if you are talking about 4 to 10 people in US Army in WW2 Germany, then that'd likely be a squad. As an aside, the next level up after platoon is company, comprised of multiple platoons, 4-ish. [In the context I was mentioning it was from Basic Training. We had 4 platoons in our company and 4 squads in each platoon. A squad was 10-ish people. It was a long time ago for me and I do not remember an exact number. When I wrote that the drill sergeant told half the platoon to attack the 1 guy, it was squads 1 and 2 he told.]
