Would A New Hope hold up today?

The special effects is what made the movie and you can't compare a 40 year old film's special effects with those of today's which happen in every other action film. The story wasn't brand new, but its presentation was.

This. There was nothing like SW4 before it. Hence the huge impact on the public, media and society.

It wouldn't have the same impact today because TV/movies/gaming/social media are now full of the same sort of stories told via the same methods.
