Since I'm familiar with the sheriff's reputation in Spalding county, let me say a few things in his defense. The man has over 30 years experience in law enforcement, as well as a college degree, and an excellent reputation. He established a program to train the police in how to handle suspects without abusing their authority, and he established a program to investigate any evidence of police brutality. As far as I know, we haven't had any incidences of this in the county.
Dix also worked with the GBI and the FBI for several years, eventually arresting over 100 members of a huge gang, including many of the recruiters who lived out of state. They were in a high crime, poverty stricken part of the community. I imagine the good people who live in that area are thankful that so many violent and potentially violent people have been removed from their neighborhoods. I used to visit that area many years ago when I worked as a home health nurse. Most of the people there are good people and many struggle in poverty. My point is that Dix cared enough about the people who lived there to spend many years working with the GBI and the FBI to rid the area of these criminals.
A friend of mine who knows more about Sheriff Dix than I do, told me a few days ago, that when Dix first became Sheriff, he immediately charged a white man who had brutally murdered an innocent black man, but was never charged with the crime by the former sheriff. Dix has won numerous awards for his work. My point is that knowing his reputation, I seriously doubt that he would have charged the young people who murdered the innocent, unarmed victim with such a severe charge if he didn't have lots of evidence.
Police don't give out many details to the public when they charge someone with a crime like this, but I did read there were several witnesses and some of them tried to resuscitate the victim while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
As I've said numerous times, we don't know all that was going on with the three who were charged, but for Dix to say what he did about them, I can't imagine that he doesn't have evidence that will eventually become public. Still, one does have to wonder why they would bring a gun to a house if all they planned on doing was egging it. And one does have to wonder why they shot the unarmed victim multiple times, then fled in their car, leaving him dead in the road. I imagine the witnesses were probably neighbors who heard the noise and went out of their homes to see what was happening. For now, I'm glad that one of the shooters dropped a phone in the road so they could be tracked down and arrested.
