Texas And Student Hair

Lets get this out of the way

"Regulations governing student hair is rooted in health concerns, specifically that dreadlocks are more susceptible to lice infestations!!"

Lice doesn't care about the type of hair. If the real concern is preventing lice infestations, a policy enforcing baldness for all students would be scientifically sported.
You're absolutely correct. Lice doesn't care, and dreadlocks are absolutely NOT more susceptible. Unfortunately, getting RID of lice is hard with locs. I had friends that had to cut them off due to lice.
Which is probably why locs are associated with lice--people are less likely to actually get rid of them so someone with locs is more likely to have them even if they are no more likely to be infected.

Hard to get out =/= leaving the lice in. Thus the whole "cut them off" that was mentioned. When you consider it, individuals with gorgeous locs potentially have much more at stake compared to those with fine strands when it comes to protecting their hair from lice. The process of eliminating lice might sometimes involve cutting the hair, which is a significant loss. This heightened risk is likely why every woman in my family adheres to a meticulous hair hygiene regimen, regardless of whether or not they have locs.

IMO they are less likely to take Lice lightly than their fine strand counterparts.
When my grandmother was a young woman, circa 1915, there was a hairstyle that as far as I can tell was sort of Princess Leia style buns. The popular name for this coiffure was "cooty garages".

Texas student disciplined for length of his locs hairstyle returns to class only to be suspended again

A Black Texas high school student who has been repeatedly disciplined by his school over the length of his locs hairstyle, returned to regular classes Tuesday after spending 30 days at an alternative school.

He was then suspended again for refusing to cut his hair to comply with a dress code policy his family says is discriminatory.

On Tuesday morning, Darryl George, 18, briefly attended class at Barbers Hill High School before a school administrator referred him to in-school suspension, according to Candice Matthews, a spokesperson for the family.

A copy of the school’s referral notice obtained by CNN states, “Darryl’s hair is out of compliance with the BH dress code when let down. If Darryl corrects his dress code violation he will be allowed to return to his regular classes.”

George will remain suspended for 13 days, the notice states. Allie Booker, an attorney for George and his family, said she is working to try to get the suspensions stopped.

Is there some reason he can't simply put it up? That's what long-haired people typically do when in an environment where long hair isn't acceptable. (Off the top of my head--food service and dealing with a wide range of heavy machinery.)

Ok. my bad for not reading the story before gave the Thums up. It says "when let down". Did he wear it down? mother claims he had braids.

I don't think it makes sense to compare the restriction to safety procedures at machine shops. This is an ordinary school, not a trade school. Checking Wikipedia, the hair length restriction is for males, not females. So, this is the school enforcing a cultural idea of gender. The cultural idea of gender is inconsistent with a different cultural idea of males with dreadlocks. So, what culture really is being enforced? Whom is the school willing to hurt while it enforces its standards about what exactly? Note also the school had been told by a federal judge in 2020, its policy was discriminatory. And the CROWN Act went into effect this year, making the school out of compliance. So what is the school trying to hold onto?

Braids can still be put up. If it's only for males, though, the code is wrong.

From the image of student's hair in the article posted by the OP. The braids where done in a way that they are already up, so length had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Really, this.
I find long hair on guys, or weird hair on anybody, unattractive. But it isn't my hair so I shut up about it.
This looks entirely like forced enculturation.

At this point, I think this is all about authoritarianism on the part of the school. I can just see the superintendent and the school board saying something like "If we let this kid wear his hair like he wants, next kids will want to wear just thongs to school and smoke maryjane!"

This story is in the news again. A conservative Texas judge has said that this kid's case was not discriminatory.

The judge appeared on a QAnon nutcase's show. He is a religious nutcase, likely dominionist.

You are confusing your conservative nutcase judges. This one from Alabama is probably from the other thread and he's a religious nutcase and QAnon dominionist. But the one from THIS thread is a conservative nutcase and probably just an ordinary racist.

You have to remember that the Republican Party is a big tent party, you have oligarchs, preacher nutcases, racists and Karens, rich guys in suits, anti-vax lunatics, and anti-tax gun nut hermits. As they increase diversity like this, it can get confusing between which variety of authoritarian judge is doing what ruling.

Between the Federal District judge saying the FDA can't do their job, Texas schools (having perfected education) being crazy on hair styles, and Alabama ruling that clumps of cells are human beings, it is getting hard to split the cases apart.

I'm still confused what the issue. If they are working with machinery, lengths of hair can come into play (though that can be managed with protocols). But otherwise... WTF?!

Long ago, when long haired hippies were attacked by uptight white trash conservatives, I has a plan I never actualized. I wanted to have some T-shirts make up with portraits of Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and George Washington with the words "Look at the hair on THAT one!"

Maybe it is time to brush that idea off again.
