It seems fans are up in arms that the Felicity-Oliver thing is not going to happen, and to be honest, I do not understand this reaction. At all. I've always been a Marvel guy and I don't know much about DC, but Green Arrow/Black Canary are one of my favorite battle couples in comic books. I don't really know why that is. Maybe it's the playful banter/teasing they do to each other during combat?
So when I heard they were doing a Green Arrow TV show, this is kind of the major thing I've been looking forward to and it's pretty much not been happening. Although Lauren's sister Sarah used the name "Canary" and dressed in a similar costume, we comic book dorks knew right away that Lauren is the "real" Black Canary. The relationship between Lauren and Green Arrow mostly happened off camera before the timeline of the TV show, and we've seen him get romantically involved with pretty much everyone but Lauren.
The fans are up in arms because it looks like the Felicity thing isn't going to happen? Why is anyone surprised by this? Green Arrow and Black Canary are an iconic couple, so we all know how the romance thing is going to turn out in the end. The writers of the TV show have done a great job upending expectations and being different from the comic books, but they can't possibly avoid this, can they?
As long as I'm whining and moaning about things that are different from the comic books, I have to say I'm not crazy about the fact that Lauren is one of the least skilled at unarmed combat in the TV series, whereas in the comic books her skill in unarmed combat is practically a defining feature of the character. The Justice League asked her to provide unarmed combat training to other superheroes for a reason.
Anyway, are there any other fans of Arrow around here? What do you like and not like about the TV show and the differences it has with the comic books?
PS -- Black Canary's real superpower is getting away with wearing fishnets even when it's out of fashion.
