Well... it's Trump... again. #47, here we go.

Neither Democrats not GOP support the Free Market. They are supported by those that hate the "free market" and want to provide as much difficulty as possible to keep others from entering the markets they current have a sizable share of.

"Free market" =/ unregulated market
Yes but GOP/Republicans claim to be free market capitalists hence my comment. And they conflate it with an unregulated market. Then claim regulation = socialism/communism, whatever scare word.

At a restaurant, it is likely the only thing that isn't reused. There is really no reason for it either. Ending the use of straws at sit down restaurants doesn't solve the plastic problem, but it is a relatively harmless attempt at reducing plastics.
There is a big difference between not providing plastic straws at sit down restaurants unless requested and forcing an inferior product on people.
I have noticed a trend of not giving plastic utensils with take-out orders unless requested as well. Makes sense. People eating at home can just use their own (and superior) metal forks and knives. But at least the solution is not to replace plastic with paper forks that would get destroyed by anything harder than mashed potatoes.

Why not just ban ALL straws? Just gulp (or sip, if that's your thing) your drink down. That's what I do. At fast food joints, they always give me a plastic straw wrapped in paper (and a plastic lid too) with my cup and it usually ends up like that as I dump my trash in the bin. Do people use straws at home to drink a glass of water or milk? If not, why do you need one at a FF joint or a cafeteria?
Why this obsession with banning things?
I suspect many people like straws even in sit-down restaurants because they like to put a lot of ice in their drinks and it's more comfortable to sip because the top layer gets too cold. I only use straws when I take out a cup and drink in my car. It's a lot easier to sip while driving that way and an open cup without a lid would be too easy to spill in a moving vehicle.
Also frozen drinks. You need a straw for a Slurpee or a Frappuccino and a paper straw just doesn't work here.

Where in the heck do you eat out. I've never seen a person be forced to use a paper straw.

I've seen it otherwise, always get it regardless if we request not to get any.

I started my own restaraunt using take home utensils. I wouldn't recommend it.

AFAIK paper straws pose no threat or hazard.
They actually have more PFAS than plastic ones.
One More Reason Paper Straws Suck
But the biggest reason to oppose them is that they suck for their intended purpose. They disintegrate quickly and have a weird mouth feel.
It's just our "populist" hero doing whatever will "piss off the libtards."
The question is, why are "libtards" so enamored of pushing sucky products in the name of environmentalism. Almost as if it was an ersatz religion for them.
But this has come too late. Most places have long since abandoned the paper straws I think.
In other recent news he's ordered the Mint to stop making pennies. They made 4.5 billion pennies in 2023 at a cost roughly double their $45 million face value.
One good idea. Should have been done a decade ago.

We should stop making coins completely

Just round everything up to the nearest dollar?
Businesses can use cents on credit card transactions without having any physical cents. How much do most people buy in actual cash any more, and how often? Not much.

True. I very rarely use cash anymore. And when I get change I just give it to my kids anyway.

Trump’s unhinged proposal to take Gaza, “relocate” more than a million starving people to an unspecified locale, and turn their bombed homes into a resort for the wealthy didn’t go over well. Following his threats to Colombia, Panama, Mexico, Canada, Denmark, and Greenland, the civilized world is aghast at the madman at the helm, and has learned a new lesson: that America betrays her allies. It is a dangerous lesson from which the US may never recover.

Anti-American forces, on the other hand, are giddy.

Russia and China can stop infiltrating our social media with bots, Trump is doing their work for them. Putin has long known that Trump and Musk would destroy the U.S. government from within while abandoning our allies, and he is elated to watch his hopes materialize. China’s Xi takes a more economically calculated approach but likes what he sees. Even Islamist militants will thank Trump for breathing new life into their Great Satan propaganda.

Trump follows a consistent playbook

No one knows how seriously to take Trump’s insanity. It could all be a non-stop ruse to distract from his robbing the treasury as Musk dismantles it.

Last week’s outrage-du-jour, Trump’s tariff drama, was merely put on hold, which means we have to watch Trump cosplay as a “strong negotiator” all over again in just 30 days.

Trump craves attention like an addict craves opioids, so he manufactures drama on a closed loop feed. To his base, the only audience he cares about, Trump’s theater looks like governance. At least the playbook is consistent: 1. Declare an emergency 2. Blame someone. 3. Coerce the blamed to do or say something, anything, even if it’s the same thing they’ve said or done for years, or will worsen the problem. 4. Declare victory, no less impressive for being hollow. 5. Watch Fox and the oligarch-owned media fawn.

... [Even] The Wall Street Journal editorial board ... described Trump’s sloppy, across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico as “The dumbest trade war in history.” They might have added, “for no legitimate reason.”

Trump’s tariff theatrics created chaos and uncertainty for two of our most important allies and trading partners. Stepping back from the brink, Trump claimed both countries made major concessions, no doubt calling him ‘Sir’ in the process, and agreed to delay the tariffs. Fox News fawned on cue, end of scene, on to the next act.

But ... those concessions [were a farce]..

The takeaway from the whole fiasco is that our neighbors’ leaders are smarter and more mature than ours is, and not just because they played Trump’s ego with token concessions. They also responded to Trump’s Neanderthalic hammer attack with a surgeon’s scalpel.

In an interview FOTUS says he wants to relocation the 1.9 million Palestinians... but population estimates put the Palestinian population at around 2.1 to 2.2 million before the war. Is this an admission the government estimates a couple hundred thousand have been killed instead of the long out of date numbers that are occasionally used? Or is he just pulling numbers out of his ass again?

I just cashed in my coffee can change collection yesterday because the can was full. Over 260 bucks.

I know it's a funny meme guys but Musk won't be deported. Rules don't apply to billionaires, do people still not know this yet?

Trump is willing to work across the aisle with other crooks. NYC Mayor and was to be felon, has had the charges form the Justice Department dropped.
article said:
The remarks came a day after a top Justice Department official appointed by President Donald Trump issued a directive to the acting U.S. attorney in Manhattan to move for a dismissal, ending at least for now a lengthy legal drama that exposed Adams’s alleged dealings with international businessmen and at least one Turkish official.
Mayor Adams, a Democrat, would join the likes of former Felon / Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich as Democrats that President Trump will do business with.

The presumed cost of Trump's pardonesque intervention will be around Trump's desire to rid NYC of undocumented people.

There is a bit of irony though, as Musk has apparently frozen money he claims was for migrants (legal) to be housed in luxury hotels in NYC. See how this marriage between Trump and Adams works out.

Ah so Republicans are against the free market after all.
Yes, obviously. That's why the Trump administration has to impose regulations that force people to use plastic straws.
Tom
I actually looked into the issue a bit deeper. It has nothing to do with the free market (which has abandoned the crappy paper straws anyway). Trump's executive order is merely cancelling Biden's executive order mandating the phasing out of single use plastics (including straws) in federal government.
BBC said:
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order ending a US government effort to replace plastic straws with paper.
The order, which takes effect immediately, reverses a measure signed by former President Joe Biden, who had called plastic pollution a "crisis".
Last week, Trump - who sold branded plastic straws during his 2020 election campaign - said paper straws "don't work" and "disgustingly" dissolve in the mouths of consumers.
In 2024, Biden ordered a gradual end to US government purchases of plastic straws, as well as plastic cutlery and packaging.
Trump's directive orders government agencies to stop buying paper straws and calls for a strategy to eliminate them nationwide.
[...]
Some studies have shown that paper straws, however, contain significant amounts of "forever chemicals" such as polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.
PFAS can stay in the environment for decades, contaminate water supplies and cause a variety of health issues.

Yet another issue where Biden allowed himself to get pulled well to the left of the American people and common sense.

It's not Trump, but because it's a Florida Republican...close enough.

The Stupid, It Hurts

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) said she wants Congress to question key investigators of John F. Kennedy’s assassination – including physicians who examined him and members of the Warren Commission.

Unfortunately for Luna, they are unavailable.

"I’m looking to actually bring in some of the attending physicians at the initial assassination. Then also people that had been on the various commissions looking into it, like the Warren Commission looking into the initial assassination."

The Warren Commission had seven members, all of whom are dead, as are the majority of counsels who worked on it. Also deceased are the doctors at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas – Charles Baxter, Robert McClelland, and Malcolm Perry – who examined Kennedy when he was brought in after being mortally wounded. Later that day, an autopsy was performed at Bethesda Naval Hospital by Drs. James Humes and Thornton Boswell, who are also dead.

So, it is NOT A FACT that only white farmers are having their farmland appropriated, but that is a fear.
If an ethnic or racial group owned 70% of the farmland, it is reasonable they would bear that proportion of the expropriation.
Please do not confuse my concern with separating fact from speculation with approval.
Again, even BBC admits that the goal of the land stealing law by the South African government is to redistribute land on a racial basis.
