This is not new. I've been getting those ever since I started on SS.

This one is different as it has a link in teh email, which most companies will tell you NOT to do...so maybe it's been around. Still....it mentions the Office of the Inspector General and mentions it was created by Congress in 1978. So they are the only ones authorized to investigate this as congress never said DOGE could replace them. And he fired them. So I think a guy with a halfway decent lawyer could scam the SSA and argue that the investigators had no right to be conducting the investigation.

The article is well worth a read. Apparently DOGE has been massively overstating the amounts of money the DOGE effort has been saving, even claiming they cancelled a project that was cancelled under Biden.

Exactly. When you engage in massive cuts you have a strong tendency to cut the lean and leave the fat. Short term gain, long term harm. Same as any corporate raider. And note his approach to determining waste--cut until it breaks, then back off. Note the result is you remove any safety margin.

But as you said this has proven to work well for corporate raiders who are only interested in net utility versus expense. At this point, pretty much exactly the same thing the US taxpayer should want as well. If the process did not truly generate value they would not continue to do this.

For example, what difference does it matter to the US taxpayer if a study of whale hibernation does not get quality research if the whole project is deemed waste spending to begin with.

It's good for the raiders, not good for the companies. You're the turkey (the bird, not the insult) looking forward to the Thanksgiving feast.

This is so important.
Get control, loot the assets, cut it loose to go bankrupt. It's a useful and common strategy.

I believe that the Teaparty did exactly that to the GOP in the aftermath of the disastrous Bush II administration.

That actually is a good point and something I hadn't thought of. If I received that from an email claiming to be head of the company, I would have immediately hit the phishing icon and reported it to IT. He doesn't send emails like that.
