How could so much be stolen? Investigators and outside experts say the government, in seeking to quickly spend trillions in relief aid, conducted too little oversight during the pandemic’s early stages and instituted too few restrictions on applicants. In short, they say, the grift was just way too easy.


“Here was this sort of endless pot of money that anyone could access,” said Dan Fruchter, chief of the fraud and white-collar crime unit at the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Eastern District of Washington. “Folks kind of fooled themselves into thinking that it was a socially acceptable thing to do, even though it wasn’t legal.”

The U.S. government has charged more than 2,230 defendants with pandemic-related fraud crimes and is conducting thousands of investigations.

Most of the looted money was swiped from three large pandemic-relief initiatives launched during the Trump administration and inherited by President Joe Biden. Those programs were designed to help small businesses and unemployed workers survive the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic.

Not to make light of the fraud that has been uncovered in Minnesota, but it is a documented fact that enormous amounts ts of fraud was committed by many different individuals and companies across the US.
The fraud originated from programs hastily set up by the first Trump administration, but continued in programs that Biden inherited. It seems like beating a dead horse but let us reflect on the level of competence and professionalism in Trump’s first administration. It is not surprising that those who enter high levels of government rejecting all or most best practices might make some errors. But honestly, humans err all of the time and some are opportunists who take advantage of loopholes and the general public desire to help those in need.

The fact that this is so public with regards to Minnesota says something about the openness on rge part of state government in Minnesota —and also about the fact that Trump very publicly goes after anyone he sees as an enemy. Tim Walz is pretty much antithetical to Trump, although he is also very much a politician.

Trumps racism is very blatant as he ‘discusses’ the fraud uncovered. The man is a piece of work—obviously ill physically and declining cognitively, Trump is not fit to hold the office of POTUS. This is a separate issue than his moral fitness or his qualifications with respect to understanding and respecting basics such as the US Constitution, separation of powers, duties of the POTUS and his inability to put first the best interests of the country rather than his own best interests.

She and her co-conspirator were convicted in March of this year.

It had not occurred to me to know or care about the specifics of who was behind the fraud until I saw something on FB that mentioned that rather than SomaliAmericans being behind the fraud, it was a white woman.

There is little political gain to the DFL to allow fraud via neglect because it harms the outstate DFL politicians. So I view the assertions that there was deliberate inattention or blind eye to this with skepticism.

I think it was a combination of not wanting to appear racist/xenophobic/islamophobic and the understanding that Somalis are an important voting block for the DFL.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged a Minneapolis man in connection with a string of sexual assaults including of a 15-year-old girl. In two of the cases, Abdimahat Bille Mohamed, 28, avoided prison as part of a recent plea deal with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and allegedly raped his latest victim in September while on probation.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi blamed Minnesota’s “left-wing soft-on-crime policies” for putting innocent people at risk from a “Somali national.” In response, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said the Justice Department news release is a “clear attempt to politicize a sexual assault prosecution to inflict further harm on our entire Somali community.”
On May 30, 2024, Minneapolis police arrested Mohamed at his home near downtown for the rape of a woman he met on Snapchat. The victim’s sister, who was also in the apartment, had called 911. The victim told paramedics that Mohamed had raped and strangled her and threatened to kill her sister.
Hennepin County prosecutors charged Mohamed the next day. Several months later, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension linked Mohamed’s DNA to the 2017 kidnapping and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in Minneapolis. In October 2024, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged Mohamed separately in the earlier case.
In April, Mohamed pleaded guilty to felony charges of criminal sexual conduct in both cases, but he did not go to prison.
Following the terms of Mohamed’s plea deal, Judge Juan Hoyos gave Mohamed five years of probation for the rape of the 15-year-old and a stayed sentence of 14 months in the other case. Hennepin County prosecutors agreed not to charge Mohamed in a May 2018 sexual assault of which he was suspected.

I think it is very likely that Mohamed being Somali contributed to the sweetheart deal Moriarty and Hoyos worked out.

It is also notable that people on this board who are usually very vocal about rape, and especially rape of minors, have had nothing to say about this no-prison-deal.

Does that mean all Somalis are incompatible with western culture? Of course not! That would be bigoted (still not racist though) because it generalizes. But our immigration system as it has been run for decades has been letting in a lot of Islamists, criminals and other incompatible mass migrants.
