I will throw in some Japanese ones to start since I think that they are both obscure and worth jumping the cultural barrier to watch:

Quill was much less sweet than this trailer makes it look:

Of course, Antarctica (1983) true story and covered as Eight Below. Hachiko (1987) which was covered as Hachi - I was real impressed with the remake, but like the original a little better.

Old Yeller
Savage Sam
Ring of Bright Water
Born Free

Haven't heard of the middle two.

Savage Sam: is a 1963 film sequel to Old Yeller based on the novel of the same name by Fred Gipson

Ring of Bright Water: is a 1969 British feature film starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. It is a story about a Londoner and his pet otter living on the Scottish coast.

This is from Nyanko 2: The Movie

man the Japanese sure know how to be sentimental about animals. Who is cutting these onions?

Phar Lap

Project X (with Matthew Broderick)

You will need hankies, big time, for both movies. You might even suffer long term emotional trauma.
