Merged Gaza just launched an unprovoked attack on Israel

To denote when two or more threads have been merged
However, Israel conducting airstrikes in Lebanese territory is a ceasefire violation which, according to the article, Israel has done thousands of times. So if the NPR report failed to be neutral regarding ceasefire violations, it was in Israel's favor.
And we have here Exhibit A as to why we are calling that article biased.

Read the facts more carefully, you are reading into the article what the authors intended you to believe, but which the article did not claim and is not true.

The vast majority of the Israeli violations are Israeli flying things having a look. No weapons involved.

And Israel is not attacking Lebanon. Note what happens: The Lebanese forces do not participate in the fighting. The Lebanese forces know that if they simply wave fists, but do not shoot and do not activate fire control radar that they will be left alone. Doesn't look much like a war to me. Lebanon and Israel have a mutual enemy: Hezbollah.

It wasn't favorable. It was neutral.
Hardly. For example, the article called Israel striking Hezbollah positions as a "ceasefire violation" but did not use that language when the Hezbollah commander admitted that they never intended to turn over their weapons to the Lebanese government.
Technically, unless Hezbollah missed a deadline for weapon turnover or overtly refused to turnover weapons, their intention was not a ceasefire violation at that time. It was bad faith bargaining.

Unfortunately, firing weapons during a ceasefire is a violation.

Once again, reality debunks your claim.
1) Why does it have to be overt?? That's irrelevant.

2) Even if you are "right", so what? What label you stick on it doesn't change the fact that they failed to honor the agreement.
You jump into a discussion without taking into the context - a dispute about the neutrality of the article. It is not a ceasefire violation during negotiations if someone bargains in bad faith which means the Derec's response was irrelevant.

No one was arguing that the ceasefire was honored. No one seems to honor ceasefire agreements these days. I don't see why anyone even bothers to agree to such a term.

Voices: Israel’s chilling new death penalty is as racist as it is abhorrent

The Netanyahu regime has passed legislation imposing the death penalty on a mandatory basis on Palestinians who commit lethal attacks on Israelis. The death sentence must be carried out within 90 days, by hanging. Whatever one’s views on the death penalty or on Israel, there is something new and chilling about a law that imposes the death penalty only on members of one group and only for killing members of another group.
Think about why this is happening: it is a response to Hamas taking hostages to get it's people freed. Israel is ensuring the worst can't be returned to kill again.

If Israel wanted to insure the worst can't be returned to kill again, why the limit on the nationality on the victims and the attackers? Shouldn't lethal attackers from any nationality who kill anyone incur the death penalty in Israel?

Here is some recent news on Israel...

The unfurl shows enough.

"built without permits". This is an ongoing issue, they build without permits and on land they do not own, then cry in front of the cameras when their illegal construction gets torn down. The EU even gets in on it, funding "schools" to be torn down.

I am also sharing two articles that offer opposing, and highly controversial, perspectives on recent events:

Note Israel's response: a libel lawsuit. You really think they would do that if they didn't already have evidence the claims were false?
Given this framework, it is plausible that many of these accounts of abuse are grounded in truth. At the same time, it is equally likely that Hamas, acting as a bad actor, exaggerates or manipulates these accounts for propaganda.
Given the number of claims that are found to be preposterous I think "exaggerates or manipulates" is a major understatement.

Instead of a transparent or "common-sense" approach to justice, we observe two harmful extremes: a state that avoids redressing systemic issues because they challenge the core of its supported hierarchy, and an opposition (Hamas) that leverages those failures to justify terrorism and hatred as "resistance." Both sides prioritize their ideological narratives over genuine accountability.

I have no solutions to offer, but simply acknowledge the tragedy of this reality.
Hamas manufactures reasons--the real reason is Israel exists but they don't want to say that for the western press because that would make it clear that Israel can't meet their demands.

Dang, did you get the above from AI? Kidding. Well written and I agree. Realistically, I don't think that there is any real solution that will satisfy both sides. I think that a reasonable compromise was close under Clinton and Barak. I think that the fighting will reduce pretty soon, but will spark up again and again every few years. I see no long term solution.
No, because the Palestinians were not negotiating in good faith. That was an exercise in getting Israel to make front-loaded concessions. After that Israel refused to make front-loaded agreements, the world shifted to trying to get Israel to make concessions in exchange for talks. And when that failed the world just blamed Israel.

Israeli settlers killed a Palestinian farmer on his own land, in front of his father. Yes, again

It's the third time in a month that Israeli settlers in the West Bank have murdered Palestinian farmers working their own land and in front of their families.
And what proof do we have of the events?

I note "B'Tselem" so I figure it should be taken with a grain of salt. But is there anything but their words? No. Note that the article says the land is privately owned, the article does not say who owns it. I find this quite damning.
What part of "on his own land" do you not get?

Israel is destroying buildings on land that is not part of Israel and not under its control as a result of any treaty or lease. Israel is in violation of international law every time it destroys homes and properties in the Occupied Territories, forcibly removes or relocates civilians, and steals donated aid. And that school you are talking about was built in Area B of the West Bank, meaning the land was under Palestinian civil authority and Israel had no legal or lawful right to issue building permits there.

FFS Loren, you should already know all this. We've been discussing the limits on the authority of an occupying power for over 20 years.

If they are going to run around killing civilians with drones, I think they should first announce that operating a drone to take photographs is a risk since they cannot determine the nature of the drone. And they could perhaps also name the regions of highest risk so that journalists can make decisions for their own safety.
Do we even know that these three were just journalists and that they were doing what is claimed they were doing with that drone?
We know that many Gaza journalists also moonlight as Hamas terrorists.
We also know the IDF has no problem killing civilians or lying about it.
We know that people bleat about claims of Israel killing civilians. The evidence often does not add up, though.
It adds up often enough.
The thing is there's no way to know--how do you prove that what they are saying is true? There usually is not any way to independently confirm the facts. And it comes down to if you want to be believed do not pour forth a torrent of lies.

Your unwavering kneejerk defense of IDF activity indicates you don’t believe that there is no way to know.

I read that and I think it doesn't matter as much as you think. The powerful control the laws, but should they? Should they be allowed to create a permit system on land that is not theirs? Why?

So now Israeli govt is accepting it and so will people claim Israel is anti-Semitic, too?
And we are to take the word of Haaretz as to what Israel thinks?
How about Reuters?
Israel military reported to accept death toll of around 70,000 in Gaza
Citing a briefing on Thursday with senior military officials, Israel's Ynet news website and other leading outlets reported that the military had adopted a similar estimate.
"In our estimation, around 70,000 Gazans were killed during the war, not including missing persons," Ynet cited an official as saying.
"We are currently doing the work of distinguishing between terrorists and those who were not involved," the official was quoted as saying.
BTW - This is almost 4 months old.
Note that it says that they have not accepted this.

And note that this is something that can not realistically be proven one way or the other. Hamas has ensured no other answers can exist, thus getting their dubious answer accepted.

We know that many Gaza journalists also moonlight as Hamas terrorists.

We know that Israeli military spokespersons often claim the journalists killed by the IDF were part of Hamas but have not provided credible evidence to substantiate those claims.

Israel has been targeting journalists in Gaza since the start of the current war.
Israel has found evidence that links about half of them to the terrorists. That is far, far above chance. And there's no reason to think that Israel would have an ID on everyone when they strike the propaganda people.

A study by Brown University in April found that Israeli attacks in Gaza since the war began in October 2023 have killed more journalists there than the U.S. Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and 2000s, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan, combined.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says "Israel is engaging in the deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists that CPJ has ever documented." Israeli attacks have also killed dozens of relatives of prominent journalists reporting in Gaza.

The smears are part of the strategy.
The problem is they call their propaganda people "journalists".

The latest major attack was Aug. 25, when an Israeli strike hit Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri during a live transmission from the open stairwell of a hospital, killing him on the spot. Israeli forces struck that same stairwell minutes later again, killing medics, first responders and four more journalists working for international media, including The Associated Press and Al Jazeera.

An initial finding by the military said troops targeted a camera positioned by Hamas, but the military provided no evidence and did not respond to further NPR questions. The military also said six militants were killed in the attack, but did not say if they were the intended target nor answer further questions.

And there is no question they are targeting journalists, which btw is a war crime, when they launch an airstrike on a clearly marked press tent.
Clearly marking a tent "press" doesn't make so.

And note that even a bona fide reporter who won't stop broadcasting stuff useful to the enemy is a valid target (say, the Al Jazeera people Israel threw out for refusing to stop broadcasting a live feed of Gaza.) You've already cooked your goose here: "camera positioned by Hamas". There is no need to show it was currently being used for hostile purposes.

And why does it not occur to you that someone operating a camera positioned by Hamas might very well be Hamas?

Two weeks before the Aug. 25 attack, on Aug. 11, six journalists were killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike on a press tent outside one of Gaza's main hospitals.

Israel's military said it was targeting Anas al-Sharif, Gaza's most well-known television reporter, who was killed while wearing a blue "PRESS" vest. The 28-year-old was Al Jazeera's correspondent in the north and had a massive online following. Before his death, he had denied Israeli allegations of affiliation with Hamas' military wing, and continued reporting despite the risks to his life. Early in the war, his home was bombed by Israeli forces and his father was killed.
Al Jazeera--as the organization that was left scrambling when Israel found one of their "reporters" guarding a hostage.
Why does it not occur to you that the failure to support your claims makes your posts appear to be complete bullshit?

Support your claims, Loren. Don't just say Israel has found evidence of something, link to the article from a reputable source that specifies what that something is and what specific evidence was found.
Think anything detailed is going to be in English?! Any evidence they present will obviously be in Arabic and there's a good chance the presentation is in Hebrew. Israel has published a list of those they have identified as having terrorist ties. And note the percent of "reporters" with known terrorist ties is higher than the percent of combatants with known terrorist ties. (Remember that leak of the identified dead terrorist database? It got reported on because people tried to pretend that everyone not in it was not a terrorist.)
We're talking about war crimes, here. Simply saying "there was this one time when a supposed journalist was found guarding a hostage" doesn't cut it. When did this alleged event happen, how was it discovered that the journalist was a guard or that the guard was a journalist, etc.
It's not my job to be your memory. It was discussed on here more than once.
And remember, even if it did happen that one time or even a hundred times, that still would not justify an airstrike on a clearly marked press tent.
You (and most of the rest on here) have a very mistaken notion of the Geneva protections. You look at Geneva and see that X is protected. You are treating this as members of X are protected, but what it actually means is that which is entirely X is protected. You see reporters are protected, but in reality they are only protected so long as they are only reporters, serving no military function. And broadcasting information of military use is a military function. A reporter doing so unknowingly would probably be warned. Doing so knowingly--enemy scouts are valid targets even if they are wearing a "press" badge.

So now Israeli govt is accepting it and so will people claim Israel is anti-Semitic, too?

Your last sentence rebuts your first sentence.

Islamism is a recent trend in the Islamic world. It's a trend that started as an anti-colonial movement, that morphed into Soviet supported communism and the after the fall of Communism (because that well of money dried up while oil money flowed in) became a fascist movement. And that's a shame, and is just an accident of history.

Right now it fucking sucks to have to deal with Islamists. I am sure they'll get over it. But at the moment they're dominated by histerical fanatics that cannot be reasoned with. Which to put it mildly, is a shame.

But people like winning. Eventually Muslims in the Middle-East, just like the Germans and Italians, will learn that fascism is a dead end
The thing is it's a strategy that has to a large degree worked. Radical Islam has gotten them a fair degree of control of many countries.

You get more of that which works. And you get more of what you reward--every time you condemn the horrors in Gaza you're actually asking for more of them. But that's too horrible, better to just don't look up.

They do not mention what percentage of the total population these demographic groups represent (~77% of the total population), as that would show that 56.2% is heavily underrepresented, meaning that adult men under 65 are heavily overrepresented.

They do not need to mention that. You _want_ to mention it because you want to be political. Science doesn't need to be political as _you_ were able to draw the conclusion from the data anyway.
No, what they did was political. They cherry picked the numbers to make Israel look bad. We can deduce the missing data but that doesn't mean most people will.

You are being political in deciding what they _should_ do.
I am presenting what the neutral would be--but they only gave the facts that supported their side.
It also ignores the fact that Hamas and other terror groups routinely recruit minor teenagers.

Why do you feel that they need to state this explicitly?
Because the data is counting those under 18 as if they were non-combatants.

No, it isn't.
If it's not why are they even counted separately??
Therefore, 15-17 age cohort should have been examined separately from the 0-14 one.

Show the math.
The graph was presented. Note how the lines deviate before 18. And there have been plenty of other discussions on this.

None of which means all 15-17 year olds are combatants.
Nobody is saying they are.

Just look at the graph. Clearly non-combatant males show basically identical death rates with females. Thus the reasonable conclusion is that male casualties in excess of female casualties are combatants. And the curves separate before 18.

Note that "combatant" doesn't require them to be shooting. Ever year the adage that the most dangerous weapon on the battlefield is a radio?

Because the law doesn't want to make an issue of whether the act was terrorism.

This is basically a warning to the pay-to-slay people that they won't be around to be exchanged in a later deal. I have expected Israel to take steps to avoid being in a position of releasing terrorists, they are doing so.

You are taking his word for it, completely ignoring the issue with this article.

The article says the information in the registry says the land is privately owned--that means someone looked. But note that the article does not say that the registry says he owns it. This makes it likely that reality is that he doesn't own it.

This only makes sense if your objective is legal technicalities rather than truth.

The 70,000 number is unquestionably bad. But there's no way to come up with a better answer so a known-wrong answer is going to end up in the history books. That doesn't make it the correct answer.
