A new work on philosophy and mood has been published: Philosophie der Stimmungen by Jürgen Stenzel.

Stenzel is the president of the International Constantin Brunner Institute (website).

Here is a translation of the publisher's description of the new work:

Moods should not be regarded as something secondary and subordinate in human experience. Starting from an expanded concept of mood, an anthropological theory is presented here, in which mood appears as the basic concept of existence. All feeling and understanding, thinking, wanting and acting is understood as mood events. We live in a complex structure of different, sometimes divergent and overlapping emotional atmospheres, the laws of which can be grasped in the "mood circle". In it, the dynamic effect of the moods becomes comprehensible and thus also any highlights on the one hand and any rigidities on the other. Moods can be positive or negative. They are responsible for our suffering and social conflicts, but also for the feeling of having arrived at ourselves, in the world or in the community. No morality has power over moods, because only what is mood in itself can become effective in action. Only the cultivation of positive moods, which is itself a mood event, can therefore lead to a meaningful life and successful togetherness. What emerges in this way is not a product of abstract reason, but coherent life itself.

This work is a solid advance in the realm of social theory. It is perhaps the first step toward a viable science of human interaction.

I have just received a copy, and I will be digging into it soon. I will post here my impressions.

'viable science of human interaction.' Hmm .... I call that modern psychology, psychiatry, and and neuroscience.

AI Overview
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who focus on the biological aspects of mental health. Because they attend medical school, they can prescribe medication and perform medical tests. Psychologists hold doctoral degrees (PhD or PsyD) and specialize in psychotherapy, behavioral interventions, and psychological testing, but generally do not prescribe medication.

AI Overview
Behavioral science is an interdisciplinary field that investigates why and how individuals and groups act the way they do. It combines rigorous data collection and systematic observation from disciplines like psychology, sociology, and economics to understand decision-making, cognitive biases, and social dynamics.

And .. definition of terms.

AI Overview
In psychology, a mood is a sustained, pervasive internal emotional state that colors a person's perception of the world. Unlike fleeting, stimulus-specific emotions, moods are generally less intense, longer-lasting, and often lack a clear, identifiable trigger.

n psychology, a mood is an affective state. In contrast to emotions or feelings, moods are less specific, less intense and less likely to be provoked or instantiated by a particular stimulus or event. Moods are typically described as having either a positive or negative valence. In other words, people usually talk about being in a good mood or a bad mood. There are many different factors that influence mood, and these can lead to positive or negative effects on mood.

Mood also differs from temperament or personality traits which are even longer-lasting. Nevertheless, personality traits such as optimism and neuroticism predispose certain types of moods. Long-term disturbances of mood such as clinical depression and bipolar disorder are considered mood disorders. Mood is an internal, subjective state, but it often can be inferred from posture and other behaviors. "We can be sent into a mood by an unexpected event, from the happiness of seeing an old friend to the anger of discovering betrayal by a partner. We may also fall into a mood."[1]

NR A typical question today. On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you rate your mental health? It appears on medical questionnaires.

Stenzel's book is a solid advance toward the establishment of a science of human interaction. Two precursors are John Macmurray's Persons in relation and Martin Buber's Ich und Du. These two works establish the central importance of relationships to human well-being. They lack, however, any clear understanding of the mechanism that underpins them. Stenzel's position is that it is mood that constitutes the fundamental mechanism of human interaction. This provides the foundation for a science of human interaction. Moods can be observed, analyzed and quantified.

All I know for sure, Steve, is that I'm in a good mood;)

And that's in spite of your AI slop drop;)

'Moods can be observed, analyzed and quantified.'

Yes, and you ignore the point. They have long been quantified in areas of science.

AI Overview
In the DSM-5, mood disorders are categorized into two primary groups: Depressive Disorders and Bipolar and Related Disorders. These conditions severely impact a person's emotional state, causing persistent shifts in mood, energy, and functioning, and are typically managed through a combination of psychotherapy and medication.

Slop drop? Have I touched a nerve NR?

First order of baseness in both science and philosophy, define your terms.

S;op drop? You bring up another obscure author claiming profound new insights.

If not what I posted what is mood? Is it purely psychological/philosophical or is it also biological as in brain chemistry?

Convince me you are not just copying and pasting something without comprehension.

The most interesting aspect of moods is that they can be consciously manipulated. I can manipulate and control my own mood, and this as an impact on the people with whom I communicate.

I will be pursuing this matter slowly. As I said, I have only just received my copy of the book.

It seems, Steve, that you always have a reason to object to discussion of any writer's work: too old, too new, too famous, too obscure, too living, too dead.

Situations binding brain chemicals can and do override self control.

Men do not have a lot of control when getting an erection in rsense to visual situational.

You are walking down the street and see an attractive woman and maybe you feel a twinge of arousal. Normal responses.

Same with social intersections. We can control moods to a degree. Drugs affect moods.

Dealing with how moods affect us and how we keep others from putting us in a bad mood is called self control. It can be learned, some never do.

Understanding how you affect moods of others and acting accordingly is called maturity.

Nothing profound here, more like common knowledge.

Mood is primarily driven by endocrinology.

Why does everyone ignore the endocrine system? It's massively influential, and yet we almost never mention it (and when we do, it's almost always in the sole context of sex and sexual development; and/or a brief and poorly-informed reference to adrenalin).

That mysterious and pervasive sense that there is "something more"; That our very thoughts and self are under an ineffable external influence, connected to but separate from our "self"? It's not (as usually misattributed) gods, spirits, or aliens. It's our endocrine system.

A mood changer, 'In The Mood'

If your feet don't start moving and you don't perk up you are probably dead.
