2026 Mid-Term Elections

MAGAification certainly hurt the GOP brand. Why should Dems follow suit and DSAify?
Because they are proposing a lot of things most people want. Medicare for all for example, raising the minimum wage, and better rights for labor.
They are also proposing things like abolishing Senate and the Presidency, de facto open borders, and giving voting rights to non-citizens. These are all in the DSA platform.

Btw, M4A has become something of a mantra for many candidates. But it doesn't usually get defined. Sometimes it's used interchangeably with single payer, but Medicare itself is not a single payer program.

The primary has not ocurred. So the takeover talk is premature.
Hopefully she falters. But DSA types have won a number of primaries so far that the talk of a takeover is certainly not premature. It is a clear and present danger to the Democratic Party.

I will never forget the image of the young girl running away from a Napalm attack. It still makes me want to weep.
This wasn't even something the US did. It was a friendly fire attack by the South Vietnamese armed forces.
I also do not see anything wrong with US trying to help South Vietnam resist aggression from North Vietnam, which was aided by both China and USSR.

Do you think the Korea War was wrong too (not sure when you were born)? Should we have left South Korea to the Kims?
And it's nonsense to suggest that Biden was dragged to the Left. He was moderate with some left of center policies, by US standards.
I have shown plenty of evidence that he was dragged to the Left.

The only positive about the latest horrible war is that it might wake up enough people to get them out to vote so the R-cons lose in the midterms. That is assuming that people don't feel too intimated to vote, all things considered.
All wars are horrible. But I think a war with the Iranian regime has been inevitable since they took over the country. It is unfortunate that it is somebody as incompetent as Trump who is prosecuting it though.
You sir, sure as F&*k don't seem to know the real history of the Vietnam war!

According to my Google Search, 35 DSA candidates have triumphed in primaries across the USA. There are 1000s of races, and not all the primaries are done, but 35 doesn’t seem like much of an inroad to me.

True that that one attack wasn't generated by the US, but the US used a tremendous amount of Napalm during Viet Nam War as well as during other wars and that particular photo caused outrage among many people in many countries and it motivated many in my own generation to protest that horrible, unnecessary war.

My own father, who suffered from severe PTSD from combat during WWII told me a few years after that Viet Nam War was over that my generation did the right thing by protesting that war, but it was more than the protests that stopped that war. Over time, a majority of the US were disgusted by the brutality of that insane war. It accomplished nothing but the loss of about 58,000 Americans and plenty of civilians and soldiers in Nam. You have no idea the heartache it caused so many people. What exactly do you think it accomplished?

And, if the idiot in the White house had kept the Obama deal intact, we would not be in this totally unnecessary war right now, which the idiot likely started to deflect from some of his other criminal activities. Now, he can't find a way out due to his incompetence and mental decline.

I still disagree with you that Biden was dragged to the left, but I would prefer most anything on the Left compared to the far right that we are now dealing with. What you define as far left, I see as left of center at best.

Again, the hoops one must go through to enact these would be so small as to be nearly impossible to get through.

How is Medicare not a single payer program?

How is Medicare not a single payer program?
It’s a single payer program unless you actually use it.
Four days in a hospital gets you 120 (or maybe it’s just 100) days of paid rehab, after which you’re on your own. So the incentive is to get so sick that you need another four days in a hospital, which re-sets the clock. Otherwise …
Mrs E was in the hospital for three days in March. She was released to a rehab center, which they said they could only keep her for ten days because … the Medicare clock didn’t get re-set.
Then they released her to an assisted living facility that ended up costing more than 12k out of pocket just for one month, and did nothing to improve her condition. I took her home, and now wish I could find something - ANYTHING - even if it cost 12k, that could help her and give me a VERY needed break (“respite”).
Medicare did approve a couple visits per week from a PT and an ST, but then pulled the plug on that too. After a fight they now permit 1 PT visit per week, and I feel like it’s futile.
The system is designed to first protect itself, like most systems are. But in this case it means abandoning its primary mission in favor of its own perpetuation. Sadly, that means encouraging people to die if they represent a disproportionate burden on the system meant to keep them alive. 🤬

DSA candidates will fare better in primaries, worse in general. Clearly if the republicans retain the house and the senate, it will be due to DSA and gerrymandering.

I have no idea what you have in assets but Medicaid pays for my brother's nursing home care, completely.

Too much in assets, and not enough, by far, to foot the bills for very long.
If Mrs E lives long enough or if I can get my niece to accept a bunch of “gifts”, we may qualify for Medicaid. They can’t take your primary residence, and that is probably most of our net worth, including the land. But they can take everything else, forcing us out - it costs considerably just to live in a place like this, once land values skyrocket. I’m paying almost 10% of the original purchase price of this property, per year, just on property taxes.
And -
Mrs E is dead set against institutionalization unless it’s in a hospital and for urgent need. I suspect that will be her downfall over time. I don’t think the kind of caregiver-plus-servant she wants even exists, at least not around here.
I’m scrambling, and don’t really feel like I’m getting anywhere.

Pays for the bed, their SS pays for the rest, minus a tiny stipend, if I'm not mistaken.

if I'm not mistaken.
I think you are: I believe it’s all conditional.
They basically look at income and assets and take whatever they decide you can live without.
If I do it in small increments maybe I can become one of those people with accounts in the Caymans?
Apparently I am going to become poor again one way or another. If I’m smart and proactive, maybe I can become ”poor on paper” and still survive in present fashion.

A number of primaries? From my count, looks like 4 for the US House. The DSA has lost 10 for the US House so far.

I guess we can get worked up about it if elections are actually held, and not at gunpoint.
Actually, strike that; we can get worked up about it if any Dems who win actually get seated in Congress next January 7th.
THEN we can talk about potentially beneficial legislation (while the government is shut down again, by the toddler in chief’s tantrum about seating Democrats over his objection)

It does not mean that they cannot do a lot of damage trying. And would you dismiss crazy ideas in the GOP platform as "it's too difficult to implement" or would you rightly use their bad ideas as a reason that they should not be supported?

And some things, like open borders, the DSA cadres can accomplish much easier. For example just by blocking legislation/funding for border and other immigration enforcement and deportations.
How is Medicare not a single payer program?
Because if Medicare was single-payer, it would pay for all healthcare for those eligible. But it does not cover everything, as there are still out of pocket costs. For example, Part A covers hospitals stays up to 60 days, but there is still a deductible (which already makes it not true single payer) and after 60 days there is a copayment. Part B covers 80% of eligible services, which is definitely not single payer.

Where did this idea come about that Medicare was single payer anyway? Bernie Sanders?

Four is a number, right? :tonguea:
And four is already too many. Especially when it includes highly toxic individuals like Avila Chevalier, who supports Hamas terror against Israel and who is dating former Al Qaeda lawyer Ramzi Kassem who is now working for the Mamdani regime.

I noticed that Blind Sheikh associate Adam Hamawy is not on their list. Maybe he is not a dues-paying member, but he is certainly DSA-adjacent. And speaking of Arabs, what's up with the use of the Arabic word "habibi" on their call to action button?

They have won a lot of races for the NY state legislature. This will spell trouble for the state going forward. Albany hasn't been exactly sane in a while, but things are about to get crazier.

The main function of the DSA is to keep people like Derec from voting for Demonkratz.
Republicans are amplifying the DSA message.
Their own messaging is having the effect of killing their electoral prospects, so pimping fear of socialism (the new sales term is “communism” fyi Derec) is the equalizer - almost like pimping the dreaded “Property Damage” in 2016 or “eating the dogs” in Springfield in 2024.

I believe the DSA is expected to have at least 15 legislators up from 9. That is an impressive percentage increase but there are 213 seats in both chambers. So even if they hit 21, that is not 10%. Hardly enough to cause trouble unless the split between the major parties is close. Right now 30 % are Republican, so a DSA landslide seems unlikely to cause much disturbance in governance.
