The Daily Beast: Welcome to Jihad City, Syria
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/05/06/welcome-to-jihad-city-syria.html

ISIS, a brutal group disavowed even by al Qaeda, says it’s the ruler of the world’s only true Islamic state. And in Raqqa, it’s creating God’s kingdom on earth by crucifying ‘infidels.’

Three years of civil war has created a catastrophe in Syria with few parallels in the 21st century. A tragedy for average Syrians, for others the carnage has been an opportunity. Amid the wreckage, jihadist groups fighting the regime and each other have planted their flags in the rubble and tested the limits of their power.

None have claimed more ground or been more brutal in the areas under their control than ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham. While al Qaeda aims to resurrect the Caliphate, ISIS claims it has already done so and declared itself ruler of the world’s only true Islamic state.

I put the blame on the feet of the faith--the idea of it, the requirement of it, and the social-cognitive-emotional phenomenon it is. Faith can make you a peaceful, love-giving friar, or a rabid terrorist extremist. Faith may be a great motivation for the extreme of selflessness (for want of a better word, after all, you're working to heap your own fortune in heaven) as much as the extreme of cruelty... but for simple, balanced, good living, it is entirely unnecessary.

I was watching the '34 version of Anne of Green Gables and was pondering an ISIS worldview version of it where Anne Shirely is stoned to death 23 times during the film for talking, having an opinion, attending a school, being a female...

These people are nuts. Their utopia makes 1984 looks like a playground.

yeah, it borders on politics...

It also appears that Saudi Arabia might be seeing some of the dogs they let loose on Syria (aka ISIS) coming back trying to bite them:

The Saudi government alleged that Saudi recruits of a radical Islamist group in Syria plotted with others inside the kingdom to assassinate leading religious figures and security officials.

The alleged plot, and another involving al Qaeda's Yemen branch, were behind the arrests of 62 terror suspects in Saudi Arabia

Well, that's good. I was worried that they weren't justified in it and were just doing it to be dicks.

LOL.

You know how it is. A holy text has content that seems good and noble and content that is plain barbaric. And you have followers on both ends of the spectrum. Where have we seen this before?

Although it is worrying that there are large populations and several governments in the Islamic world that are, by our definition, extremists. They support things like execution for infidels and stoning for adultery. Luckily, in the west, such groups seem to be small and crippled by modern and moderate populations and governments.

Saudi Arabia is one of America's allies. What is the difference between Saudi Arabia and al Qaeda? It seems to me the differences between the two seem more tactical than ideological. They both agree on subjugating women and stoning people and forbidding the free practice of religion. Otherwise, they just differ on handling the Palestinian problem and the relationship with the West.
