Is there anything to it? My doctor suggested I try it out to help with my IBS, and the literature seems to be leaning more towards "fat is actually healthy" than it was 20 or 30 years ago. I think the jury may still be out on carbs.

Highly refined carbohydrates and sugars are probably what is behind the obesity epidemic. I couldn't say anything about IBS, though.

That is correct that research points that way. Then the conversation shifts to good vs bad fat.

I eat low carb both to lose a bit of weight and manage it and also because I feel my body just handles a protein and fat diet better. It´s hard for the first few days but then you body adjusts and you lose you craving for carbs.

I think you should try it. I am convinced by the scientific evidence of its many various benefits, even though my addiction to all kinds of bread stops me from observing a strict diet as suggested by that evidence. :)

For me it's beer. Love the stuff, all varieties, the hoppier the better. I could probably cut out bread and the sweets without much of a fuss.

Beer with IBS? a pretty explosive mixture. Pun intended, so 'pretty' is the wrong adjective. :)
But I agree, and for me beer is just liquid bread. Agree with the hoppy part too.

You ain't kidding about the craving... damn. Just going from having a muffin every morning, which is basically a neutron star made of sugar and starch, to something like eggs and bacon. It's like I don't feel drowsy or tired from lack of energy, but all I want right now is an entire red velvet cake for some reason. I had beer last night, so maybe that's what set me back onto the ol' glycemic rollercoaster.

I'd have no idea what to replace bread with. The best I can figure out is knäckebröd; but that's technically still bread and I find it's crumbly nature somewhat inconvenient at times. Also, I'd find it impossible to replace rice or forego various other foods. L'sigh.

There are also these things called Oopsies. Basically bread made out of eggs and cream cheese. Might try making one later this week.

The thing about bread is the high glycaemic index and of course tha gluten. And non gluten breads are often processed by the same machinery as wheat and other breads And non gluten don't have that glutn sticky feel to them as you chew them. Rice is another thing I could not give up. It's a disaster all round. Better have a beer and forget it... :) I guess brown rice is better as far as the index goes and it has no gluten. See the beer makes me optimistic already...

Okay, so I'm on day 3 of this diet and I can definitely say there's a different kind of energy here. I can't really explain how, but I've just been feeling so... good.

And no gas or bloating or any more gross IBS stuff, at least for the time being. I was actually kind of worried about that, as some people say fatty foods cause problems in that zone, but other reports are coming around lately to say it was never really the fat, it was the intestinal environment of having loads of sugar all the time AND adding fat.

No real cravings for sweets anymore, at least not as bad as the day I started.

I find myself cautiously looking forward to meals, which for me is pretty huge...

I've done this diet a few times; great results every time as long as I stick with it.

This isn't a permanent diet. For me it was a 30-40 day gut it out, meat and cheese diet. No substitutes (fake bread and whatnot). But it works because it has to work as long as you stick with it.

Once your body burns all the stored sugars in your body, it will have to begin burning fat as an energy source. Therefore, the kind of weight that you want to come off (fat) will come off.

But it's tough. If you stick with it, you will be rewarded for it. No counting calories, no mystery foods--as in can I have this or that? No, you can't. Meat and cheese: that's what you can have. And some peanut butter. There are all kinds of low carb recipes for things that are supposed to taste like carb-bombs. Eschew them. They make it worse.

At least that's my experience.

Good luck!

You don't actually need any carbohydrates in your diet. Meat (and eggs if you want) are all the body needs to function at its best.
