I'm a little surprised at his age. I suppose it varies case by case, but I'd think at ninety, I'd be sorting out a good way to end it myself before things progressed too far, and try to make the most of my remaining time in relatively decent health.

This will probably set the "dump Hillary, draft Jimmy" movement back a bit.

Anyone know what Adlai Stevenson is doing these days?

Carter was crushed by Reagan in 1980.

The nation has gone downhill ever since for most.

Reagan was the perfect mindless mouthpiece for the interests of the rich.

One wonders if things would have been different had his hostage rescue mission succeeded instead of embarrassingly failing.

Man talk about good genes.

He's 90 before cancer rears its ugly head?

We should all be so lucky.

It varies greatly. He may eminently treatable. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's only around a few more months.

Radiation to the brain could blind him, besides other unpleasantries.

My best friend from high school died from melanoma that had spread to the brain. The radiation treatment added on an extra few months of life, but he went pretty quickly once the cancer was detected (within 4 months). Melanoma is very hard to treat.

How long ago did he die and how old was he? Apparently in the last few years new treatments have increased survival time for melanomas significantly. Also, cancer in very old people tends to progress slower.

He was 27 and the cancer was detected February of 2012 and he died May of 2012. I have heard a little bit about the recent progress. It's pretty incredible what a difference just a few years makes.

How painful is cancer? I'm assuming when you are on hospice care you get all the morphine you want?

A good friend is about four years post diagnosis of melanoma following a history of other, less serious skin cancers.

So much depends on location and how advanced the cancer is when it is diagnosed, as well as the quality of the treatment.

With President Carter, the location of cancer in his brain and the fact that it is multiple sites of metastatic cancer are not good. However, new treatment options includinf immunotherapy, can make a great deal of difference.

Young guy. That sucks. :(

Once cancer has spread it's normally just a question of how much time they can buy you and at what price (in unpleasantness).
