Civilization 6 announced

Well, that's good. Civ II was good, Civ III was meh, Civ IV was awesome and Civ V was a horrific piece of crap. They tend to do very good jobs on the even number releases after beta testing changes on the odd ones to see what doesn't work.

Hopefully they keep that trend up and I can play this in early 2018 after the first few service packs work the game-breaking bugs out.

For me, CIV IV ousted Civ III because it changed the pollution mechanism. Anytime I would get an itch to play III, I would recall cleaning up all of that pollution in the modern age and play IV. However Civ V(with both expansions) knocked Civ IV out for me because it felt much more epic. It could be that Civ V's poor AI gives it a bad rap, but I only play at Prince level difficulty, so I'm not aware of that aspect.

Civ III was the only installment that I did not care for that much. Civ V was a bit weak before the first expansion, but that was so long ago, and I have played it so much since the expansions were released, that the pre-expansion game is but a distant memory. The AI is less than impressive, but if you let it cheat like crazy (set it on higher difficulties), it can be challenging. I typically play on Emperor these days, and haven't lost a game in quite some time. Some of the scenarios can be quite challenging as well, if you play the right Civilization. It took me forever to beat Out of Africa, even on King difficulty, until I played as Egypt.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Civ VI coming out in October, but first I still have several civilizations that I have not yet won with in Civ V.

Saw it on Steam when I logged on this morning. Looks good, and I like the fact that city buildings, wonders, etc. will be spread out over several hexes instead of squeezed into one as with V. At €60, though, it'll be a few Steam sales before I even think about shelling out for it.

I only ever played III and spent far too much of my time doing so. I used to play vs 15 AI players, it was great fun to have massive world wars in the industrial age, suddenly there'd be 20 or 30 declarations of war within a couple of turns and the whole world would go to pot. But the aforementioned pollution - what crap idea!

People are annoyed about the graphics choice, but here I am wondering if it'll improve load times.

I am cool with the graphics either way, cartoony or realistic doesn't matter a whole lot as long as it looks good. The few screenshots I have seen look pretty nice, but the one thing I would like to see that no Civ game has done very well yet is tile variation. If they can make improvements there, I am all fort it.
