When MSNBC anchor Joy Reid challenged Coulter's repeated use of the term, Coulter sniped back at Reid, saying "You're not gonna police my language!"

Coulter once again described the audience as having both "Hispanics" and "Mandarins," which spurred Reid to respond: "What does 'Mandarin' mean? You mean Asian-Americans."

Anti-intellectualism in its purest form. Not that MSNBC is a great example of intellectualism, of course.

"Written in Mandarin"??

"Mandarin" is referring to a dialect of Chinese. However, the written form is consistent across all dialects. It feels wrong to say something is written in Mandarin--it's written in Chinese!

(And the dialect bit is why you see what at first appears stupid--Chinese movies subtitled in Chinese.)

Besides, "Mandarin" is "leader speech"--if she's calling them Mandarins she's saying they are the rulers. Is she going to kowtow to Beijing?

So, who is the constituency she is appealing too here? When was Mandarin ever used to refer to the American meaning of Asian? Why not just say oriental which has fallen off the euphemism treadmill?

personally, I think that considering that the Brits use "Asian" to mostly refer to Pakistani and Indians and so on, keeping the american term "Oriental" which means all Asian except Russians, Pakistani, Indians and most central asians would have been good.
But that ship has sailed. Probably it being used during the time of the Exclusion Acts helped make it have a bad connotation.

A) She is mocking the Chinese as an aid for Trump.

2) She isn't that bright, so she may just be that stupid.

Ann Coulter is a troll. She knows how to get attention by saying and doing outrageous things. Today she calls Asian Americans Mandarins, tomorrow she'll call them Malaccas. But I suppose I should give her credit for not calling them chinks.
