Maryland's ban outlaws "assault long guns," mostly semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 and AK-47, as well as large-capacity magazines, which prevent the need for frequent reloading.

The court turned away an appeal by several Maryland residents, firearms dealers and the state NRA association, who argued that the ban violated their right to keep and bear arms under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment...

The case focused on weapons that have become a recurring feature in U.S. mass shootings including the Nov. 5 attack at a Texas church that killed 26 people, the Oct. 1 attack at a Las Vegas concert that killed 58 people, and the 2012 massacre of 20 schoolchildren and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which prompted Maryland's law.

I thought this was pretty good news so thought to share. Some of my workmates will be very upset and afraid.

Tell them they won't need automatic weapons if they customize their guns to take a very light trigger pull and do the proper finger workouts to develop their flexors and pump up their twitch response. Then sell them a 'patented' Trigger Finger Trainer you made out of a popsicle stick and a couple of rubber bands for $99.95 with 15% a discount because they're your friends.

It’s funny how they call liberals “sensitive snowflakes,” but we’re not the ones saying we need to run around with a fucking gun every day to fight off the boogey-man.

SCOTUS certainly doesn't want to delve into what models of weapons can and can't be legal. That just opens up a major can of worms. Of course, the problem remains, it is very hard to manage these weapons if states allow them.
They're banning a style of gun.

Is that a violation of freedom of expression? ;)
Don't give the ultra conservative justices on SCOTUS any ideas!

Unfortunately, I also work with some folks who'll be likewise, "upset and afraid." But I agree that this is good news.

How strong is the push within the Democratic party for bans on guns altogether? Only police and the military should really have guns. I don't feel safe when I travel to the USA and see people openly carrying guns. I'm still amazed that this is legal in some of your states.

People like Ben Shapiro argue that we need a right to guns because they keep us safe, and when that argument fails, they then pivot to the argument that we need guns to protect us from government tyrany.

The first point fails on the face of it, but what of the second argument. It seems a little daft to me to think that a hand gun in the hands of the populace is going to defeat the US army. For that you would indeed need assualt weapons, and even tanks and maybe even nukes, no? So why don't the gun advocates argue for the right to own a RPG launcher, tank, and nuke?

I think that any drive for reasonable gun control died after Sandy Hook... forget about anything about a ban. There are simply too many guns in this country to ban them all. There are likely too many semi-automatics to ban as well. Every mass murder since, it goes:
1) sick feeling in stomach
2) resignation
3) move on

These weapons do not protect anyone from drones. But that doesn't matter. Many of these people are not well in the head when it comes to politics and will believe the craziest shit... like Obama planning on invading Texas... a state already within the US.

What does that mean, too many guns to ban? Are you saying it would go the way of alcohol prohibition? There would be mafia gun dealers and underground speakeasy gun ranges? Or are you saying you need the right to own a gun, because criminals are likely to have guns, and you think you can protect yourself better if you also have one? Or do you mean your populace is too pro-gun and you can't get the votes so you don't think it worth the attempt? Or does there being too many guns out there make it impossible to ban them in some other way?

I think the last option is the most obvious. Too many gun nuts with too many guns. You couldn't reduce the number enough on a volunteer basis and seizing them would get very ugly. You'd have Ruby Ridges everywhere.

Yup, though it really isn't the 'too many' part that is the issue. It is simply that large majority of Americans are convinced that it is an important right to have. I think the best that can be worked towards over the next 10-20 years is 2 things: (1) create a national requirement that no guns exchange hands outside being done at government authorized facilities (aka end the gun show BS). (2) Convince Americans that guns should carry liability issues just as private swimming pools and cars do. If you leave your AR-15 on the kitchen table overnight, and your buddy who is sleeping over, takes in the morning cuz he got the itch to shoot up a mall, you become financially fucked.

That isn't already the case?

We here in Merica worship the fine honed shaft of the gun...one should not punish those that want to share in the viewing of such beauty.

In The USA you have the right to bare arms. In Canada we have the right to bare breasts. I think I'd rather live here than there.

Canada is beholden to big breast and the USA to big gun lobby. The NRA used to be about increasing markmenship among Americans. Then in the 70s, it became a political gun lobby. And the last decade, it became shameless. The policies the NRA have fought for in the 70s and 80s have led to several massacres that we see pop up several times a year it seems now.

And the NRA has to fend off the even crazier Gun Owners of America (GOA)...

Hey, some of us allow bare breasts :D

THANK YOU, PORTLAND.

The World Naked Bike Ride is an annual, worldwide bike ride that highlights the vulnerability of cyclists everywhere and decries society’s dependence on pollution-based transport.

Guilty as charged.

I have read that it will be hard to change because pro-gun people are one issue voters and anti-gun people don't care as much about the issue. True?

The below article covers the various aspects of US views on guns. But I think there is a clear point that a large percentage of Americans see gun ownership as a valid constitutional right. About 30% of Americans own a gun, and even the 70% that don't, have a third of them that support gun ownership rights. Those 2 combined pretty much put the strong support for gun ownership rights at least above 50%.

While gun owners and non-owners tend to agree on most top-tier constitutional rights, one key difference is the extent to which owners associate the right to own guns with their own personal sense of freedom. Roughly three-quarters of gun owners (74%) say this right is essential, compared with 35% of non-gun owners.

No. W. Bush and the GOP passed the PLCAA which makes it essentially impossible for gun makers, dealers, or owners to be held at all liable for their guns being used by others in crimes, no matter how recklessly unsecured the gun was or how unsafely designed, etc..

In fact, in many US states you can actually knowingly give your gun to a convicted felon who then uses it in a crime and not suffer any penalty at all, or at worst get a minor fee for a misdemeanor.
