Jordan Peterson

“Women get paid less than man, and it’s good that that’s the case. This is because men are inferior to women, and therefore we should make more money based on our superior intellect. In fact, I don’t think women should even work at all. They should stay home and make babies”
-- Jordon Peterson

Are you sure he actually said that? I only found one source for it and I think that was satire.

I just googled for Peterson quotes and that one caught my eye. But I was not impressed by some of his nonsense. He seems to start out reasonable sounding and then drifts off into wingnuttery. But then a lot of people are impressed with Ayn Rand after reading her novels. Some get over it.

Now the question. Are there better people around than Peterson (or Rand) we should be paying attention to?

I found that I agree greatly with THIS opinion of him. I also think Matt Dillahunty revealed a lot this in his debate with him.

Finally, this humorous takedown of Peterson was pretty good.

I have a feeling he didn't actually say it. Which would be an interesting 'post truth' item in itself. Words put into his mouth by a supporter satirising his critics ends up being one of the first things to come up in a search for quotes by him. Lol.

That's a good question, are there better people around. I'd guess that he's not the only person making the valid points that he does and that there's probably someone making them who's not as.......dodgy. These days, 'reasonable and balanced' views don't garner the attention they deserve in a world hungry for news items and opinions from the simplistic and controversial ends of various spectrums.

I disagree with a lot of what he says. I still think he's important and good. The right isn't exactly crowded with intellectual talent. The left needs somebody like him to weed out all their/our idiots.

Also... when it comes to clinical psychology I think he's awesome. Has some solid advice.

Worth mentioning is that my closest group of friends have started worshipping this guy. I hope it's a phase, because I'm so sick of hearing about him.

Anybody who thinks he's a genius should listen to his podcast on the Bible. They'll be cured from their faulty opinion in no time. 100% embarrassing.

I still support the guy. The world needs him.

Unless he's badly misrepresenting himself in YouTube vids, he appears to be an "alt-right" Deepak Chopra getting way more attention than he deserves.

He's just popular with the alt right. If you listen to what he says he's just a classic conservative

Arguing against the idiocy of the far left does not make you "a conservative". Even the left should argue against the idiocy of the far left. They are the ones who are most damaged by it.

I agree with some of what he says, disagree with other things he says, but enjoy pretty much all of it. His position is clearly not "alt right", the newest buzz-word.

He argues in favor of individualism. That's a stumbling block for some people. When a person's mindset is group identity, such as racists on one side and SJWs on the other, that person will see people as either with their group or with the opposing group. Not much middle ground there. As a result people are saying "he's not with my group, therefore he is with the alt-right group." Nonsense.

There's a far left in the US???

Oddly, I agree with you about disagreeing with a lot of what he says, and I would also agree that he makes some valid and imo important points too (and that he's talented and smart) but overall I don't support him, because overall I think he's giving good points a bad name.

What are some examples of specific things you disagreed with in the clip you posted?

Yes, this is the video I was referring to earlier in the thread. It shows Peterson at his worst. The man has some nutty ideas. He also speaks truth on some great points. He's neither all one or all the other.

I would have liked to have listened to that but the volume is so low its practically unintelligible.

He doesn't actually say much, from what I can tell. I've had a hard time pinning down exactly what his message is, apart from the rhetorical style he employs to deliver it. From what I have heard, he is one of the best examples I know of the "what stupid people think a smart person sounds like" trope, and uses the uncritical acceptance he knows his fans will provide as a license to play fast and loose with his ideas, whatever they may be.

Indeed.

But are they? I agree that they should. I agree that they're the most damaged by it. But they're not. Leftist media seems to lack completely a mechanism with which to sort the idiots from the talent. Which I think is down to (idiotic) identity politics. If somebody is a Muslim FtF transgendered midget African-Penguin, they can say pretty much anything unoposed by the left, and get published and spread. They'll just clap their hands and say "good on you for trying". And not to put a too fine a point on it... but that is racism, sexism and everything else that belittle's people. Judging people's words on the merit of the words themselves is the only way to go. And the left is failing this test.

Jordan Petersen seems to be the only person who actually listens to what they have to say and comes up with arguments against them. Jordan Petersen seems to have more respect for "minorities" than the left does.

I'm calling him a conservative just based on his opinions.

I watched about the 1st 15 minutes (short of time). Eek. For a while he basically avoided (albeit with a lot of talking) the question about the likelihood of god's existence by talking (a lot) about the value of religion and then, when pinned down, he cited the 'fact' that psilocybin can, via mystical experience, cause people to be able to stop smoking as evidence of.....'something' supernatural.

I googled and apparently as far as I can see there was one small psilocybin pilot study done in 2014 on 15 people, with no control group. True, 80% of them (12 people) had not started smoking again after a year, which is way above success rates for other methods, but the study involved a combination of psilocybin and CBT with no way of telling which factor was in play more than the other.

Potential good news for smoking cessation efforts, but hardly (yet) a 'fact' and hardly even close to a supernatural explanation.
