The republicans have an incredible knack for securing incredible power despise being a minority party. They control every single branch of the US government (Presidency, senate, house, supreme court, most state legislatures, most state houses, most state governships). But there are far fewer republicans than democrats. Democrats always try to play fair and nice. Republicans are vicious and cunning. The republicans stole the currently vacant supreme court seat. If Merrick Garland had been seated during Obama's term, The SC would have been mostly right of center, but left of right wing. But the republicans stole the pick. Obama's worst decision was to not recess appoint Merrick. The republicans would have for sure. If the dems don't start to play dirty, we're going to lose our country for generations.

Here's an idea, if the dems win in 2020 (huge assumption on my part), I think the dems should pack the court. If the dems control the presidency and the senate after 2020, let's nominate a 10th SC justice. If we continue to play nice, we're not going to have another chance of nominating a justice for a generation. All the republicans are young, conservative, and right wing activist. Adding a 10th juror will block some of their agenda.

I think it’s a terrible ideas to pack a court on the basis the democratic process has produced results you despise.

It sets a terrible precedent of the opposing party, once elected into power, and unhappy with the composition of the Court that was created by the opposing party, then add another justice.

At some point, such as now, people must accept the outcomes of the democratic process, regardless of their level of disgust for the outcome.

Republicans are vicious and cunning.

You mean, like, if people keep talking about this like it's acceptable and good they'll figure out they have the chance to do it first level of "cunning"?

How about this: democrats accept the "democratic process" that fairly elected Trumpster in the same way that the republicans accepted the democratic process that elected Obama? Would you accept? IOW, if the dems ever take the senate again, no nominations during an election year. Zero.

I admire the fact that republicans have many non-democratic methods to maintain power such as gerrymandering, not putting democratic nominees to vote, securing Russian assistance and etc. I'd like to see the dems fight back a little.

Even if the result, like now, is the destruction of the democratic process, and it's its substitution with a totalitarian dictatorship, and when the majority of the electorate didn't vote for the tangerine turd?

At some point, such as now, people must accept the outcomes of the democratic process, ...

This is contradictory. The people are democracy. We do not have a pure democracy and if we did the people would make the decisions or if we have a greater democracy, the people could recall Trump for being a crazy person. It isn't democracy that you are looking to protect, but instead something else. Power I suppose--being a "winner"--and actually against the people.

The filth that is trumpo was not fairly elected.
How about the scummy republican party stopped gerrymandering and disenfranchising so they win despite losing the popular vote? How about the orange nazi just once sticking to his previous position and getting rid of the lunacy of the electoral college? How about fixing things so that well-off blue states don't get fleeced to pay for willfully destructive policies in ignorant red states?

So you're saying that Trump should pack the courts?

I say that's exactly what I've been thinking. The fastest way out of the abyss into which Trump is sending us, would be for the Dems to take over Congress at the midterms, then appoint not only a 10th but also an 11th SCOTUS justice, giving them a majority. Then overturn Citizens United and un-do everything Cheato has done. Maybe impeach some his incompetent appointees...

But it all depends on record turnout in November. The Trussian cabal will be hard at work suppressing the vote and spreading lies about every single Dem candidate, so it's a tall order.

So, in this acid trip hypothetical, when Trump is re-elected and the Republicans retake Congress, they should appoint 20, nah, 100 SCOTUS justices. This plan can't fail.

Well, the response by Republicans, to your hypo, shouldn’t be to pack the Court.

Hyperbole? The U.S. doesn’t have a “totalitarian dictatorship,” and neither is the U.S. close to such a regime. The democratic process isn’t experiencing “destruction.”

So, in this acid trip hypothetical, when Trump is re-elected ...

In this acid trip hypothetical, Trump is languishing in jail in 2020, having been convicted of multiple felonies including treason, and is ineligible to run for office.
What part don't you understand?
His execution would probably get ratings as well. Fantastic incredible tremendous YUUUGE ratings - MAGA!.

You're gonna be really depressed for the next six years.

Projection. I'm sure you'll be crying in your beer when the Trumpanzee Party is deposed .... by WOMEN!
OTOH, if the Trussian propaganda machine manages to work as well on the rest of the public as it has on you... you could be right.

"They go low. We go lower."? No, that will not only create a race to the bottom and abandon all hope of fixing the political system, but also ruin any remaining ethical standing the Democrats have, which they moreso than the Republicans depend on to win elections.

"They go low. We go high". That was the right answer. The problem is that the Democrats haven't been going with it. Candidate Obama was swept into power on a message of hope, change, and inclusiveness that sold very well. "Yes we can". Too bad President Obama was so different than that. He sold out and people who voted for him saw that. It hurt the Democrats. Corporate Democrat and bought Hillary was then nominated and that hurt them further, as she ran on a platform of "I'm with her" and "No, Bernie, we can't". If they sink to underhanded tactics as suggested here, that may do them in for good, as even more voters lose faith in them and vote 3rd party or don't vote.

What is needed is the opposite of underhanded tactics. Not compacency or finger wagging. You need the Democrat party to become staunchly anti-corruption, plugging legislative loopholes that the Republicans may abuse, and continuing Candidate Obama's message of Hope, Change, Love and Inclusiveness.

Conservatives, and especially Republicans, come from a mentality of caution, fear, and responsibility (real or feigned). Liberals come from a mentality of optimism, ethical progress (real or feigned), and risk taking. You have to play to your strengths. That you failed to with Hillary (and to a large extent with Obama setting the stage for Hillary; but at least he could talk the talk if not walk the walk) is how you got Trump in the first place.

How shortsighted! Of course that can't happen, because as soon as the Dems have their 6-5 majority, they can pull a Mitch, and change the rules so teh Pugs can't modify the court.
Think, Trausti! Think!
