From ABCNews:

English film and television star Patrick Stewart will reprise his role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series for US network CBS.

The best way I could describe my reaction to this news is hopeful, but hugely skeptical. After the debacle that is Discovery (aka Action McShooty Space) I can't bring myself to be optimistic about this at all. If Alex Kutzman has anything to do with this new project, I'll be avoiding it as if it were a syphilitic rhino. Still, here's hoping I'm wrong.

He's too old to play a lead or even a regular character. I expect to see him in a guest appearance in the Starfleet Academy show that's been rumored to be one of the upcoming new series (or at least one of the series in development).

EDIT: And after some googling, it seems Kurtzman is the producer in all new Star Trek shows so any hope of him not being involved is slim indeed. I don't really care for any of his tv shows, but must admit that Star Trek discovery has been different from other stuff he's done. Optimistic to see him taking over as showrunner in season 2, just because the previous showrunners were so bad that any change has to be positive. But it's probably going to be just another Sleepy Hollow or Scorpion.

Never liked the Picard character. Stiff, aloof, arrogant, condescending. More like a 19th century British captain. Stewart played the role more like a parody.

Liked Kirk and Cisco, human characters. ST has been beat to death.

Picard, schmicard. Just having a series in TNG era is actually cool enough. I'm sure they'll have other guest stars from the show as well. Everyone is an admiral or something, as is typical of Star Wars, but I guess fan service is unavoidable.

Yes it was intentional.:D

The show is behind a paywall. Don't care. If it actually gets decent reviews, I'll consider the Blu-Rays. I have a hard time thinking this could be too good, though ponder that Stewart wouldn't just jump into something like this if he didn't trust the product.

Personally, I'd prefer a remake of Voyager, that embraced the concept and was actually good. It'd be like a mix of the Discovery age and Voyager, a new Federation starts in the Delta quadrant.
