'Star Trek' Star Nichelle Nichols Suffering from Severe Memory Loss, Claims Son | TMZ.com

A certain Dr. Meena Makhijani has been taking care of her. From the second link,
Makhijani gives details of the severity of the disease by rating various cognitive functions. Most alarming ... she says Nichols has major impairment of her short-term memory and moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place and immediate recall.

On the bright side, the doctor says there's no apparent impairment for things like long-term memory, orientation of her body, comprehension, verbal communication, concentration, recognition of familiar people, as well as ability to reason logically and plan actions.

She has my deepest sympathies....she was a great woman - an icon.

Dementia is horrific - it took my mother 8 years to die of it in the most undignified way. I hope Nichelle fares better.

Nichelle Nichols Autographs & Documentary | Indiegogo
We will be pitching to the networks to do a full-length documentary based on Nichelle’s life, struggles, relationship with Gene Roddenberry and subsequent super-stardom. Tools are needed to create this pitch, so we plan on traveling to Neutral Zone Studios in Georgia, where we will shoot a short portion of the larger project. Nichelle will do a retelling of events directly from the bridge set of the Enterprise and several of you will be able to see it first-hand.

'Star Trek' actress Nichelle Nichols 'was trying to protect herself' before shocking audio, pal claims | Fox News
A movie producer claiming to be a close friend of Nichelle Nichols said she’s heartbroken to hear of the distressing news concerning the pop culture icon. “I am extremely angry,” Angelique Fawcette told Fox News about the recent reports. “I have been trying for this past year to stand up for her and her rights and dignity. It has been extremely challenging… I am very upset by the video and audio that was released.” The 86-year-old who played Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series in the 1960s is reportedly heard screaming for help in audio obtained by an Atlanta news station earlier this week. The actress, who is reportedly suffering from dementia, is engaged in a guardianship battle that involves her son Kyle Johnson, Atlanta’s WGCL-TV reported Tuesday. In response to the allegations, Johnson, 67, told Fox News: “I have no interest in providing a comment.”

According to the report, a voice said to be that of Nichols is heard shouting in the recording, “You get your hands off me! You’re trying to get rid of me!” Loud shrieking is also heard on the audio, which was recorded April 23, the station reported. The station says the star’s manager Gilbert Bell supplied video and audio in which Nichols reportedly discusses her son’s efforts to gain control of her estate. “I’m the boss of me, Gil. He’s not the boss of me,” a voice said to be that of Nichols is heard saying at one point. Later the voice is heard saying “I didn’t give permission to have conservatorship over me. I didn’t know what he was doing.”
Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols: Friends React to Video of Her Screaming with Son | PEOPLE.com
On Tuesday, Nichols’ manager Gilbert Bell provided Atlanta’s CBS46 with a disturbing video, apparently taken by him, in which the 86-year-old TV star can be heard screaming in protest as she holds what Bell claims are legal guardianship documents filed by her son, Kyle Johnson.

...
“She was reading that court document in that video, and that is what made her upset,” Fawcette continued. “I know for a fact, as a person who has been around her all of this time, that she is not at that level. She still takes care of herself. For example, when I visit her, if I change the color of my hair, she notices. And she knows that her friends never come by. I’m the only friend that visits her.”

Fawcette said she has become invested in protecting Nichols and, at her request, even recorded a video of her in 2013 in which she states her desire to be her own legal guardian and continue working. The video, which Fawcette posted on YouTube in 2018, can be viewed here.
