Mass shooting in Canada;

A gunman disguised as a policeman killed at least 18 people, including a female Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, in the worst mass shooting in Canada's modern history. The 12-hour rampage started late on Saturday and ended with a car chase. Police said the suspect shot people at different locations in Nova Scotia, many of them randomly. He was killed in a confrontation with police. He was reported to have been driving what looked like a police car.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the attack as "a tragedy".

BBC

A tragedy indeed but it does show that other things are happening in the world. This has barely made a blip on the news, (in fact, I did not see it reported on TV news) so focused is the MSM on "the virus".

There will always be evil among us.

Yeah, how dare the evil MSM focus on the thing that 99% of the human population are focused on and is impacting every aspect of their lives.

Oh wait, a google of "Nova Scotia" yields nothing about "the virus" but does yield multiple stories about the shooting from NYT, Guardian, and CNN. But they are the axis of liberal media evil, how can this be? Could it be that my beliefs about the MSM boogeyman are just infantile irrational delusion and/or a dishonest trope I use to discount any information they convey that undermines my dogma?

Easy tiger. Perhaps the lock down will ease up soon and you can get out for a walk and some fresh air.

The fact that your claim of MSM ignoring this is lie based in your delusional dogma is worthy of such colorful mockery. And I didn't touch on why you felt the need to put quotes on "the virus" as though it's something they made up.

I don't recall seeing anything reported on the TV about this shooting I only became aware of it after scrolling through an online newspaper (Teh Gruaniad I think) and found it nestled between home cooking recipes and a potential buyer for Newcastle United. I have never had to google search for "mass shooting in Canada", usually the MSM report on it wall to wall. But as we know, the MSM are preoccupied with death porn from "the virus" so these deaths don't interest them. Perhaps if one of the deceased were to have been tested positive for "the virus" they would take a different view. (and before you go off in a tizzy, this is tongue firmly in cheek)

It's odd what motivates this. Apparently the shooter was a dentist, liked in the community. He planned his rampage in detail. Thing is, it's likely not religion, politics, or any other motivation we'd like to apply. This was a suicide mission. He burned down his house before he started. He was gonna die. I speculate that like the Las Vegas shooter he just decided one day "to Hell with everyone" and murdered because he could.

I'm not sure this really fits in the 'politics' section of the site. It's horrific news, but not political in nature. Perhaps the way things unfolded invites inquiry into police response. There may be a renewed chorus of the standard talking points we get after a mass shooting (/arson in this case). But it's still not particularly political.

That this barely made a blip on the Sunday news... I don't know how much that means at the moment. A lot of the people involved in breaking the latest developments may be benched or working remotely at the moment which may have slowed things down. It's been all over the news here today (with some reporting last night as well).

I've got to think this is bigger news on CBC. In America, if it doesn't happen in America...

...what were we talking about?

Enfield was on my radar for the Maritime trip I am trying to organize. This story is just awful.

In defence of Americans, Canadian news seldom reproduces the same levels of drama and absurdity on a regular basis. Rob Ford's Crackgate and Trudeau's blackface may have been the most attention I've seen Canadian news get in the US over the past couple of decades.

The various towns affected are very small. Not that it makes loss of life more tragic, but in some cases it's likely pretty much everyone in the area knew the victims at least a little.

I guess some people don't realize that The Washington Post is also main stream media.

Police fanned out across more than a dozen crime scenes Monday after a rampage by a gunman disguised as a police officer left at least 18 dead and homes in smoldering ruins in rural communities across Nova Scotia — the deadliest mass shooting in Canada’s history.
Officials said the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, also died in the weekend attack. Authorities did not provide a motive for the killings.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told a news conference Monday that police expect to find more victims once they are able to comb through all the crime scenes, some of which were houses set ablaze as victims were inside, adhering to government calls to stay at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's a tragedy, and if you want to read about tragedies that occur all around the world, I suggest that you turn off the tv, and subscribe to a good source of journalism.

I read about this when it happened and I'm pretty sure it was covered at least briefly on tv news. But, Americans are so used to hearing about mass shootings that most of us probably just shrugged when we heard that one happened in Canada. I'm very sorry that our neighbors to the north are dealing with this along with the pandemic, not that there's ever a good time for a mass shooting.

Even most Canadians don't really care about Nova Scotia. Canadian news also rarely gets the hyped up treatment that similar news does in the U.S.. Most of us heard about this, paused for a second and thought 'that sucks', then moved on.

I am surprised that the usual suspects are not using this example to go off on the danger of middle aged white men as they do whenever someone of color or suspected Islamic leanings engages in a mass killing.

How come no one has blamed this white man's genetic makeup or culture for this tragedy? Hmmm.

Even most Canadians don't really care about Nova Scotia.

It still ranks above Newfoundland for many of them. I still recall some of the "Noufie" jokes my brother told me when he lived in Canada. Newfoundland is even lower than Labrador - at least they have famous retrievers.

It's pretty big news up here in Canada. Not much that can be said or done about it, though.

Have you folk given thought to removing restrictions on access to guns? That has worked wonders in America.
