Jessica Krug, the professor who pretended to be Black, resigns from George Washington University

Jessica Krug, the embattled historian and African studies scholar who admitted last Thursday to impersonating a Black woman, has resigned from her post as an associate professor at George Washington University.

Her resignation was announced by the university in a tweet Wednesday afternoon, explaining that her classes for this upcoming semester "will be taught by other faculty members."

Krug initially shared her story on the blogging platform Medium, where she confessed that she "built her life on a violent anti-Black lie" by claiming a multiplicity of Black identities over the course of her adult and professional life, including being Afro-Caribbean and North African. Krug is, in fact, a white Jewish woman.

It is time to stop marginalizing trans-racial people. If someone with a penis can be a woman, surely a white Jewish woman from the Bronx can be black. After all, race does not exist. Or, something.

EXCLUSIVE: 'I have never met anyone more racist than her!' Musician reveals he went on a 'Tinder date from hell' with race faker Jessica Krug who spewed her hatred for white people and attacked him for being 'passive' in the 'war' on gentrification

If race doesn't exist you wouldn't have anything to obsess over. Except for transgender people of course.

No one says that race does not exist. What social scientists say is that race is a culturally defined social category, with dubious and inconsistent relationships to biological inheritance. One can easily be said to be in or out of such a social category. I do agree that the world would be a better place if exploration of alternative racial identities were non-controversial. But that world is not our world, and the long ugly history that makes this particular kind of imitation offensive cannot just be wished away on a gust of disingenous idealism.

Thanks for reviving my moribund thread, Don!

For the peanut gallery:

The reason racial identities are distinct from gender identities in terms of the rightfulness of adoption of them is that being of a racial identity is about more than merely how you look or what culture you appreciate. It is, rather, about the way people interact with you, both today and through your life. To claim such is to LIE about a culturally ubiquitous experience.

You cannot be black, as a white person, because you have not been on the receiving end of negative racist bias your entire life. You can't even snap your fingers today and start having that negative bias. There's no way a white person would understand this experience, and it is a huge part of the core of what being black means in the US. As you are you will never know the dubious joy of being arrested for walking with your hands in your pockets or of worries of being shot at a routine traffic stop.

All someone has to do to start getting treated like a woman is to live as a woman. Sure, you won't have periods (not every woman does, after all), but you will experience all the rest of it, from clothing without pockets to random catcalls to threats (and instances) of rape or even murder. In many cases trans people face much harder challenges than cis women.

I long for a world where cross-cultural identification is acceptable owing to a lack of such racial/cultural bias. But we aren't there yet.

Sure. And if somebody sufficiently blacked up to 'pass' as black, they too would be treated like a black person.

Except womanface is socially acceptable, and blackface is not.

The conclusion doesn't follow from the premise. It's as silly as saying if you can get skin cancer, you can get hair cancer. The only way you can make that statement with confidence is if you fundamentally misunderstand at least one of the things being discussed.

The biological basis for sex is much more significant than for race. If we let the former go then it’s disingenuous to not do so for the latter.

What we are comparing is gender identity versus racial identity. The evidence supporting the existence of transgender identities as more than a social or psychological phenomenon cannot magically be applied to transracial identities. The word 'trans' isn't part of a magical spell granting transitive properties. No one is pretending you can just say 'transmaterial' and suddenly *poof* you're a goddamn saxophone. It's not Harry fucking Potter (though I suppose even if it were, it still wouldn't work that way for other reasons).

The biological basis for sex is one of the more significant factors for why the case for transgender identities has gained credence in recent years. That coupled with decades of observational data and various therapeutic models for treating gender dysphoria has led to increased weight for affirming and legally recognizing gender identity. None of that currently applies on the basis of race.

In fewer words, there is adequate evidence for A, but not adequate evidence for B. That's why we currently accept A, but tend to remain skeptical of B.

How do you know what someone feels inside? #stoptransphobia

Nothing I wrote is contingent on knowing what someone feels inside.
