The Great Hypocrisy of Right-Wingers Claiming ‘Cancel Culture’

Conservatives don’t hate cancellation. They hate consequences—for themselves.

colin-kaepernick-ap-img.jpg

Imagine complaining you are a victim of “cancel culture”—from the floor of the House of Representatives, no less—and then the very next day holding a packed press conference covered by every single major news outlet. Or wearing a mask with the word “CENSORED” on it while you deliver fully uncensored remarks to millions of broadcast television viewers. This is how Marjorie Taylor Greene—the first lady of political thea-tuh who tweeted about suffering the “slings and arrows” of a “vicious cancel culture mob”—has spent her time in office so far. In the rare moments between her anti–“cancel culture” rants on high-profile right-wing podcasts and TV shows, the Georgia representative posts incessantly about just how canceled she’s been to her social media audience of more than 735,000 followers.

Greene and the entire right wing are currently using “cancel culture” in the same way Rudy Giuliani used to deploy “a noun, verb and 9/11”—as a handy-dandy phrase to inoculate themselves from wholly valid criticism. (Rhetorically, “political correctness” is its more direct predecessor, but then Black Twitter invented the term “cancel” and white conservatives decided that, like everything else, they just had to have it.) The current ubiquity of the phrase belies its central thesis, since all the airtime and column space conservatives are given to talk about cancellation proves they were never cancelled in the first place.

Ted Cruz claimed at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference that liberals have canceled stand-up comedy, and “Judge” Jeanine Pirro called the shutdown of white supremacist safe-space Parler a “censorship that is akin to a Kristallnacht.” ...

...
...

Or rather, they’re against consequences for themselves. When they were the ones doing all the canceling, the right wing was actually fervently pro-cancellation. It’s not just the fundamental lie of “cancel culture” that’s so irritating, it’s the staggering hypocrisy of those who can’t stop, won’t stop whining about it. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, in a tizzy over the discontinuation by the estate of Dr. Seuss of six lesser-known books with racist content, had the audacity to gripe via social media that “the woke mob” is trying “to erase our history and cancel anyone who disagrees.” This is the same Tom Cotton who wrote a whole legislative act aimed at banning schools from teaching the 1619 Project...

...

There is an historic thread tying right-wingers who today call everything left of them communism, who label anti-racist and social justice movements like BLM terrorism, and the anti–civil rights racists and red-baiting McCarthyite “traditionalists” of yesteryear. You want to know who was actually canceled by these sorts? Abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay, who was ordered by a court to stop printing his abolitionist newspaper The True American, had all his printing machines stolen by an angry racist mob, and was twice the target of attempted assassinations. Callie House, mother of five and a formerly enslaved woman who fought for reparations for emancipated black folks, who was railroaded on phony mail fraud charges in 1917 and served a year in the Missouri State Penitentiary. Labor leader and Socialist Party Chair Eugene Debs, who spent more than two years in jail for a 1918 anti-war speech.

...

The most salient American conservative value is cultural dominance, and these people resent the cultural shifts they perceive as threatening that dominance. For so long, they took pleasure in canceling folks for challenging their power, punishing dissenters by ruining reputations, careers and lives. Now, they’ve seized upon the word “cancel” to describe the comparatively mild discomfort of being held vaguely accountable by the people they believe should shut up, and put up with the pain they actively seek to cause. The anti–“cancel culture” movement runs on resentment and fear—of the democratization of social authority and influence, which they believe whittles away at their position as the arbiters of morality, justice, and freedom—virtues they have always defined in transparently narrow, self-serving terms. ...

...

Good point. Did everyone just not notice many of the claims are fake from people who are not cancelled and that conservatives have done the same thing?

Colin Kaepernick is but one example.

Moreover, the cancel culture of conservatives goes WAY BEYOND cancelling someone socially or from a job, it goes to in many cases, outright EXECUTING them.

For example, the very conservatives complaining about free speech and being cancelled are often the same ones who want to cancel Nancy Pelosi PERMANENTLY.

Their rage comes from a long history, millennia, of cancelling gay people, atheists, non-believers and others who have not deserved it by STONING them and more recently by lynching them.

Leviticus 24:16 ESV:
Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

Leviticus 20:13 ESV:
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

Leviticus 20:27 ESV:
A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.

Exodus 31:15 ESV:
Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death.

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 ESV:
If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

The screaming about cancelling is so hypocritical, it's just one more way they are trying to do exactly what they accuse the left of--trying to control people, but in this case so that they can get away with whatever they want. And that can be very dangerous.

Yeah, I was thinking of the GOP cancel culture yesterday, too. About all the votes they want to cancel. About the medical care access they want to cancel. About all their violent rhetoric to cancel the lives of those they oppose, and their refusal to interrupt the canceling of lives by guns. They want to cancel gay marriages, they want to cancel trans athletes, they want to cancel Planned Parenthood and community organizers and unions.

And then when they are merely called to justify their unconstitutional and inhumane policies, they screech and whine and wail and gnash their teeth like someone has taken away their lollipop.

It’s pretty disgusting.

This is the same GOP that pushed to ban gays from the military, continues to keep trans people out of, well, most aspects of life, pushed (along a notable number of dems) for censorship of music/movies, and even tried to get what is now one of the most popular games (D&D) cancelled back in the day.

Hypocrits yes, of the 'highest' order.

Just got put in FB jail for three days for posting something that included "kill the filibuster".
I appealed, and was notified that it did indeed violate their so-called "community standards".

The fucking FILIBUSTER is deserving of Zuckerberg's protection, but Nancy Pelosi is not.
That's Republicans for you.

The social media platforms aggressively defend and spread disinformation as long as the disinformation drives clicks and sells adds. They do this up to the point that the rhetoric gets extreme enough to expose them to liability. The really ironic thing is that the people crying the most about "censorship" are the biggest censors. You think they let dissenting content and comments appear on their channels? Hell no. They block, ban, and delete all of the place. You set up a competing parallel channel or profile and they will report report report until the platform pulls you down for harrassment. Bunch of lying shit bags and the platforms are ultimately on their side.

What else do you expect from the literal worst of fucking human thought and behavior? Scaredy cat? You might be a right wing authoritarian moron. Can't admit wrong? You might be... Insistent that everyone conform to your dipshittery? You might be...Think someone's right just because they're on your team? You might be... Think someone's wrong just because they're on the opposing team? You might be... Pathologically compartmentalize to the point where you don't even know what you said yesterday? You might be... Think science is just like religion? You might be...

Seriously. I'm not even joking. Take the worst cognitive pitfalls possible in human minds and notice that they pool toward right wing ideologies, toward authoritarianism, toward violence, toward conservative religion...

Name something. Stupidity? That pools on the right, too. Ignorance? Yep. Lack of education? You got it. Lack of self awareness? Selfishness? Greed? Narcissism? Yep. And so on.

Every human has the capacity for all of these things, just not necessarily the tendency. What we are seeing is just how the worst traits of human beings pool together and arise as culture in our technologically connected world.

No, Metaphor. Facebook is a social media platform.
Do I have to explain everything for you?

A money-making enterprise, it is beholden only to the almighty dollar. As Scombrid has kindly enlightened you, it is a bad - maybe the worst - actor in the disinformation wars of the United States and elsewhere. In fact I'm pretty sure you're one of its victims.

Currently Facebook panders to right wing maroons, trying both to retain them as a gullible audience that is susceptible to their paid advertisers, and to ensure that there will be public outcry against any proposed governmental oversight or regulation and to suppress any activity that could further spotlight the need for such oversight or regulation.

Their frantic effort to avoid culpability for their past misdeeds now includes a shotgun approach to censorship that results in nonsensical 'cancelling" of statements that its robot analysis suspects of advocating violence against persons, though they do allow it if the target is a "public figure", such as when Proud Boys threaten to kill Nancy Pelosi. As a result of their panic reaction, "the filibuster" is part of the protected class. It's just too funny!

While Facebook's founder and largest shareholder is definitely Republican - tending toward Trumpsucking - neither he nor his Company has any ideological center that can be determined beyond insatiable greed. Which places him and his Company firmly in line with the GQP.

Now you know.

To explain something to another, you must first understand it yourself and have the ability to communicate that understanding to somebody who doesn't already understand.

Your previous post said:

That implies that Facebook is deliberately sympathetic to censorship that favours a 'Republican' narrative. If you did not mean to say that, your communication needs help.

I'm pretty sure I have nil interest in your fantasies about my putative victimhood.

In what way does Facebook 'pander' to them that is unique to right wingers?

Are you suggesting that poor AI recognition is part of Facebook's deliberate 'pandering' to the right wing? Are you suggesting that the 'public figure' exemption is deliberate 'pandering' to the right wing? Is Facebook selectively enforcing its "do not threaten private people" policy but only on left-wingers? Or are you suggesting that the policy, even if fairly enforced, is built solely to cater to right wingers, because only right wingers make social media death threats against public figures?

While Facebook's founder and largest shareholder is definitely Republican - tending toward Trumpsucking - neither he nor his Company has any ideological center that can be determined beyond insatiable greed. Which places him and his Company firmly in line with the GQP.

Oh, I see. Get off Facebook, then.

That sounds pretty believable based on my own facebook experiences with Qarens.

Fits in with what I've seen from Facebook for a decade now - among others. FB's always been a cesspool. Youtube was obnoxiously anti-trans for a long time, but still lets a 19th century bigot and harrasser like Steve Crowder on their platform. Twitter tries to de better, and *often* does, but still falls short of where they could be.

...I think that at this point it's obvious that "cancel culture" is a phrase to get reactionaries riled up and giving money to grifters.

There’s No Such Thing as Cancel Culture
Social norms are a never-ending contest

The editor of a business magazine has drawn a bright ethical line that marks an extreme boundary of what kind of character, what kind of behavior, deserves the opprobrium of the whole community of Forbes editors and readers. He dangles before the corporate world the specter of being permanently marked by shame.

That strong statement from Forbes, with its promise of shunning and shaming, reminded me of the early days in the Trump administration, when the cagers of children—Stephen Miller, Kirstjen Nielsen, John Kelly—and their apologetic propagandists Sean Spicer and, later, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, could not go out to a restaurant in Washington, D.C. without being heckled and catcalled.

Some people were wringing their hands at the incivility of it all, appalled that these poor Trump apparatchiks couldn’t even enjoy a meal in peace at a nice restaurant.

All right then: What if, instead of the boos and the shouted epithets, the restaurant-goers just took to their feet, in utter silence, and stared unflinchingly at these agents and abettors of genocide until, like the Marquise, the Trumpists fled not “court society” but society as a court sitting in judgment of the shabby selves their ruthless acts had exposed?

The collective and unwavering moral scorn of a libertine society that has been pushed to the limits of its tolerance—censure from a crowd more inclined to give power-players a pass—is a fearsome thing for people who commit foul deeds behind a façade of social respectability.
It is, in fact, what they fear the most.

There is no such thing as “cancel culture” — there is only culture.

In this case I agree with the riught.

There is a consistent effort to eradicate aspects of culture demd politically incorrect.

If a white guy opens a Mexican food restaurant he will be accused of 'cultural appropriation' and hounded. This happened in Ca to two women who staed a food truck business selling Mexican food. Hounded out of business on social nedia.

The cultural tyranny has shifted form the right to the left.

I remver the Smothers Brothers TV show and the censorship they faced over pollical commentary and humor. They had a censor on the set. They were hounded off the air.

Now it is the left enforcing pollical correctness in speech and action. If you say anything deemed offensive or insensitive you are off the air, look at recent TV events.

Bullshit. Times are changing. The world is changing. Right wingers hate and fear change. It's not like millions of people got together and decided to "cancel" a backward world view. The backward world view is just no longer hidden behind ignorance and compliance.

The only people who say the phrase "politically correct" are people who want to get away with bigotry and abuse in the form of "just a joke" and "don't be so sensitive." Well, the world needs less joking abuse and more sensitivity. Sorry that you grew up being so disrespected that you not only accept it but try to justify it.

And the cries of censorship we're hearing from the right are from people who are talking as they damn well please, and writing books, and editorializing on their TV shows, and posting all over the internet. No one is being censored for fuck's sake. Fox and its blithering followers continue to spew hateful rhetoric unfettered. And Facebook and Twitter were right to cut off Trump and to cull his violent obedience monkeys to stop them using their platforms to incite violence. I'm sure that's not the information old white men are recieving, though. They're getting "political correctness" and "censorship" bullshit.

And the right is still very much the culture of tyranny. Seriously, Steve, you need to get out more.

People against racism are not strictly leftists. I know it's hard for you to imagine, but the twitter mob isn't monolithic. There's also a bit of confirmation bias in an echo chamber, too, as there isn't any mainstream media screaming "CANCEL CULTURE" every time the Reich wing goes to cancel someone, like there is on conservative media and even Bill Maher. I mean, for example, when Trump went to cancel Good Year, no one screamed about cancel culture. Or when Nancy Pelosi blow dried her hair, no one was screaming about Reich wing cancel culture but it was there. No media outlet was classifying it as cancel culture back in the 90's with all the Bill Clinton stuff or more recently with the right-wing frothing at the mouth "LOCK HER UP" at Hillary. There was also a lot more...death threats from the Reich. So, moreover, as pointed out in the op, conservatives are often about far MORE than mere socio-cultural cancellation.

This happened in Ca to two women who staed a food truck business selling Mexican food. Hounded out of business on social nedia.

Clearly you missed parts of that story. It wasn't just white woman selling Mexican food. It was white woman who told everyone they stole the recipes they were using.

Surprised to see Oral Roberts University playing in March Madness now.

Would anyone here if in an HR position be reticent to hire an ORU graduate?

When my last Company was very very tiny (6-10 people total) we turned away some people because they totally did not fit in with our "culture" even though their skill sets were not in question. Some because of visible discomfort with law enforcement, a couple because of macho attitudes and more than one because they couldn't get through an interview without talking about their god. The core personnel of the Company weren't all atheists, but none of us wanted to hear about god in the workplace, nobody asked about it and it seemed just plain weird that an applicant would bring "god" up in a job interview.
But if someone came to us with a nursing or business administration degree from ORU it wouldn't have counted against them.

Here's The Life Of Brian with everything you need to know about blasphemy and cancel culture.

 There is no "cancel culture." There's a country of hundreds of millions of people making choices, most of which you don't approve of.

What's shown in that clip is a murderous mob, and murderous mobs do exist, as we saw on January 6th.

And I just want to add that every time you guys whine about being the victims of your pretend cancel culture, all you're saying is "lots of people don't like us and they're not going to give us air time and/or money." Boo fucking hoo!

Poor social dominance cult, tryin' so hard to dominate and WE JUST WON'T LET THEM. :melodramatic:
