Question about Stalin's Purges

I have a question about Stalin's purges, labor camps and human nature in general .


Most people would claim they would run through fire for their children and even die for them. Supposedly under Stalin if you goofed up or got caught breaking the law your family was punished too. If you have children and were living in the USSR in Stalins time would you do what you were told and even work your butt off to keep not just you but your kids from getting shot? Or would you say "oh screw myself and kids" and just let yourself and them die.

Kids were not shot during purges. And in general, relatives were not even punished. Other then being sent out of Moscow to Siberia or something.
Of course if both husband and wife were holding high position then it's a different story.

Human nature?

Both Stalin and Hitler were severely abused as children.

That says something about human nature.

Svetlana burned through at least 3 marriages and a later lifetime of restless wandering. She spoke many times of her fear and disgust of her father.
Yakov committed suicide in German PoW camp in 1943.

Whilst the children are responsible for their adult choices many eye-witnesses remarked on the casual and calculate cruelty and'/or indifference of Stalin to his children. That did not help them with their adult choices

I am not trying to defend Stalin but alcoholism is pretty common disease and Nazi concentration camp is not exactly a vacation.
Nobody can accuse Biden of being a sociopath and otherwise a bad parent, but look at Hunter Biden.
