FYI for our fellow politickers:
A gender field has been added to user profiles to denote pronouns if you wish to use it.

Add the pronouns you’d like to be used, “He/Him” or “They/Them” or “She/Her” so that people can remember what you use.

For those who don’t care - leave it blank. But for those who wish folks would use something particular, there it is.
Click on your name at the top right and go to “account details” then scroll down to gender.

And thanks to TomC for the suggestion.

Would describing oneself as "faggot" be a problem? Perhaps a little to thorough and honest?

Asking for a friend...
Tom

Informal: sie/hir
Formal: she/her

The informal version is like a nickname. It's like calling somebody "Cat Daddy" or "Method Man," but instead of an informal nickname, it's an informal pronoun that sort of highlights the individual character of the person you are calling by it. As for how that applies to me, well...think...you know me. I mean I am not exactly secretive about my weirdness. That is what it's referring to, that and nothing more.

For formal/office use, she/her will do.

Are the above sets of pronouns the only pronouns available, or are they just an illustration/example?

If somebody puts suggested pronouns in that field, are moderators going to enforce use of the pronouns? I am unclear on the rules of this new policy and the 'Terms and rules' link on the bottom right does not talk about pronoun usage.

Is "faggot" a gender?
I suspect not. Neither is "insufferable cunt", because whilst that describes some people accurately, it doesn't explain gender.

Just stay inside, mate. The outside world is clearly too terrifying for you.

I am also interested in the answer to this question. Does iidb actually have guidelines for acceptable posting, aside from what is at that link? If so, where can they be found, and could we make them easier to find?

That only throws up further questions for me. If TomC, or I, or someone else, puts 'faggot' in their gender field, is that a violation of the spirit of the 'gender' field, and how are moderators going to be able to tell? Or is the gender field absolute self-identity?

For example, ZiprHead already has 'Old Fart' in his gender field. I believe some people would find that an offensive mockery of the idea of gender identity.

I am not terrified by the world.

Given the arguments you have raised in the past on similar subjects, I'm certain you are currently arguing in bad faith. Good luck with that.

I am not terrified by the world.
I totally believe you.

I am not making any arguments. I stated a belief - that putting 'old fart' in a gender field would be regarded as an offensive mockery of the idea of gender/gender identity.

If I put 'old fart' or 'faggot' or 'fuck off' in the gender field, or if I put he/him/his or she/they/theirs or beep/bop/boop as my pronouns, would that be accepted by the administrators/moderators, and is the policy to enforce self-selected pronouns?

These are real questions. If we are agreeing to participate in a discussion, we must also be told the terms of engagement.

Okay.

Look at you, worrying about offensive gender descriptions. A sign of growth on your part?

Is "faggot" a gender?
No. It's gender+

I have a very gendered screen name. Anybody sufficiently familiar with the language spoken on IIDB to communicate will know that much about me.

That's not true of all posters. You and Ziprhead have so much in common.

Adding "faggot" would just be strong evidence that I'm also gay, really out, and kinda mouthy without much regard for decorum.

It would be for posters who aren't so familiar with me. Just a sort of heads up.

It is an enquiry. What does iidb mean by its 'gender' field, and what are the rules around its use? If somebody has pronouns in their gender field, must they be obeyed with moderator enforcement? Or will enforcement be selective?

It seems to me that that belongs in a 'sexual orientation' field, not a 'gender' field. But then, perhaps that's because I know what I and most people mean by sexual orientation, but I don't know what iidb means, or shall decide to mean, by 'gender'.

I am trying to get clarity around this field and whether iidb has introduced new rules of engagement.
