Stephen Breyer to retire at the end of this court session.

Btw, I loved the "I'm not a biologist answer".
It doesn't take a biologist to understand what a woman is, any more than I need to have a PhD in Pure Mathematics to say 2 + 2 = 4.
I think you may have missed the sarcasm. At least it looked like sarcasm to me. The question she was asked was idiotic.

Better response, "Sorry, I'm not smart enough to answer that. That is why I became a lawyer." Self deprecating and insulting the audience at the same time.

I'm not certain the level of intelligence to get tripped up in the question or answer. That some people have shoehorned their understanding of gender and sex to an outdated dichotomy, when we've (well, some of us) learned and accepted that it "isn't that simple" isn't her problem.

Clarence Thomas is reported to still be in hospital. It was estimated he would be there only two days.

Speaking of recusals or lack thereof.

Yesterday I read that the Repugs were trying to persuade Manchin to vote against Jackson, but today he said that he planned to support her. The guy isn't as bad as some thought.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Friday he plans to vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, praising her "exemplary" record and career and labeling her "supremely qualified" to be a justice.

The centrist Democrat's support gives Jackson's nomination a major boost after four days of contentious hearings, all but assuring her historic confirmation to be the first Black woman on the high court, as long as the rest of the Democratic caucus stays on board.

"After meeting with her, considering her record, and closely monitoring her testimony and questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, I have determined I intend to vote for her nomination to serve on the Supreme Court," Manchin said

Looks like she will be our newest SCOTUS justice!
🥳

That depends on his actual motive for this vote. Is it because she's qualified, or is it because he doesn't want to change to an (R) after his name and have to buy all new stationary...?
The cunt owns a yacht, like a navy. What the flying fuck do you think chief?

I really don't care what his motivations were, I'm just glad that he didn't let the Repugs talk him into voting against her. Nobody gets everything right and most people have at least one redeeming quality. And do you all really think that a liberal Democrat could win an election in WV? We're better off with Manchin than with a Republican Senator in WV.

Don't think i'm not pleased with the results, i'm just saying calling him 'not bad' for one act requires ignoring lots of other acts.

One of the biggest reasons I vote Democrat is because they are so much less inclined to squelch dissent.

I said he "wasn't as bad as some thought". Seriously guys! Sometimes you get too hung up on one or two words in someone's posts. I don't live in WV so, I have no power to vote for or against Manchin. Still I'd rather have him in the Senate than any of the current Republicans. I don''t support or love Manchin, I'm just glad he's planning on endorsing Jackson, and I'm glad that he wasn't persuaded to join the Republicans who tried to convince him to deny her the position. I'm glad he's doing the right thing, even if I don't agree with some of his other positions. In the big scheme of things, what I think doesn't matter.

And, I agree with Tom on this. While it's harder to herd cats than it is to herd sheep, I'm glad that the Democratic Party is a big tent party, instead of one that marches lock step with its leaders.

I'll agree and take it a step further.

It's much harder to herd Americans* than TeaPartier Republicans.

* I don't like using the term American if it doesn't include everyone living on two continents. But when I use "USonian" my vocabulary becomes the issue instead of my opinion.

Indeed. The Dems revel in taking verbal abuse, and loudly swearing their fealty to the principle of allowing it.
I think it used to be a more effective election campaign tactic than it is these days, but the Party does it out of habit now.
It amazes me that they have not awakened to the fact that fear is an overriding motivator. Sure, positive vision, inspiration, expression of ideals - all that is good shit, but doesn't stand up to "LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!" or "THOSE GUYS JUST STOLE YOUR CAR!!".

Right now, Democrats should have an identifiable incarnate evil with which to scare the entire electorate - or at least their own constituents - to come out and battle it at the ballot box. It's easy pickin's. There is so much evil, the players are so well known, their evil plans so transparent... All that's missing is a name that everyone can use. A tagline, a brand to go with the branding statement.
Everyone opposing a republican in November should have exactly the same version of
"THE WORLD AS YOU KNOW IT IS GOING TO FUCKING END, IF YOU ELECT THIS CORRUPT TRUMPSUCKING Q-BALL BASTARD! HE'S A (fill in new tagline/brand/identifier)"
But they won't do that, because it's more fun to signal their own virtues and try to sell their utopian promises.

I used to get annoyed by the term American, but then I thought since we are the United State of America, it makes sense to refer to us as Americans. None of the other countries use the term America to identify themselves. Think about it. You don't hear people saying, Canada of America or Brazil or America, or Costa Rica of America etc. We're the only ones, unless I've forgotten some small country who actually uses the word American to describe ourselves. There just isn't an easy way to identify ourselves, which is probably why we ended up using the term Americans. I think everybody knows who we're talking about when we use that word, but I get what you're saying. :)

And do you all really think that a liberal Democrat could win an election in WV?
It might be possible, if they ran an actual liberal who campaigned on popular policies rather than another Republican light ‘corporate dem. But the party probably won’t let that happen

We're better off with Manchin than with a Republican Senator in WV.
Sometimes I wonder about that. In the current situation yes, as it gives the dems control with a 50/50 split. Any other time probably no as he gives republicans cover, letting them claim bipartisanship for their stuff, claim Not all dems agree with whatever when he is a lone holdout, and of course blame democrats for not getting something done when he screwed them over. With a Republican in that seat at least people would get a more accurate picture of how things are in Congress

One of the most important acts!
