I would assume the thumb on the scale was whatever would keep people watching, so they see more ads.

And while almost no one will get any of that, the point is, our Internet infrastructure is weak. Our data has already been stolen by many cartels. But TikTok... we need to act on that!

It's widely acknowledged that TikTok is renowned for featuring videos that often lack coherence or meaningful context.

Furthermore, there is an abundance of content that endorses problematic behaviors, including twerking, pranks on parents, soft porn, nude dancing for increased views and likes, and the use of vulgar language to appear "cool." Remarkably, these videos are garnering millions of views.
Twerking is problematic behavior? Soft porn is problematic behavior? Nude dancing is problematic behavior? Vulgar language to appear cool is problematic behavior? The only part of your list I agree with is pranks--because all too often people teens don't realize what's going too far.
Its difficult to imagine a more effective means for a foreign country to take down another nation than to brainwash their young population with social media. I just heard on the radio today there were young people calling congress people threatening to kill themselves or other people if they passed any legislation against tic tok. Young people brainwashed to this extent over such a dumb and stupid app is a serious issue IMO.

So yes, tic tok is a HUGE threat way way more than you give it credit.
And you believe that they weren't prank calls?

We've seen some pretty obvious thumbs on the scale with Shitter, is there any reason to think there aren't more subtle thumbs on the scale with all such platforms?
Talking about thumbs on the scale:

Its plenty bad enough when private media companies put their thumbs on the scale but horribly worse when the government forces their thumbs on the scale. And horribly horribly even that much worse when it is the foreign government putting their big thumbs on the scale.

Especially when they are trying to save lives. Incredible when truthers are up in arms over the government trying to prevent the spreading of actual lies that got actual people killed.

I left twitter and facebook because they're just cesspools of stupidity and hate so I may be wrong here, but is the little lightning bolt at the bottom of the the tweet with the words "See the latest COVID-19 information on X" a way to direct people to actual facts on posts that spout bullshit? I recall social media platforms starting to do that when it was obvious that their users are too dumb to be able to figure out what's true and what's misinformation.

Moving from getting your news from Russell Brand to getting your news from John Stossel is not a step in the right direction. None of what he said was even remotely accurate.

I will happily bash China every day of the week, and twice on Saturdays.

The WSJ observes, in good China bashing form, that we are sliding toward a Chinese style fascist economy. The TikTok ban is only one of several recent moves to clamp down on industry by the government. Our politicians are claiming there's an emergency this time, as government officials often do to excuse power plays.

Soft porn is problematic behavior? Nude dancing is a problematic behavior?
It's a platform with 13 year olds on it.

If the platform was 18+, I could see that, but it isn't.

Steve Mnuchin wants to buy?

How will that affect the redpilling people are getting on Gaza now?

Seeing nude dancing isn't going to harm anyone, even if they are only 13.

There's plenty of stuff on there that's harmful but he's encouraging it.

Seeing nude dancing is on a platform of rampant "monkey see monkey do" is a trigger to say "ooh, maybe I should try that, look how much engagement that got" and suddenly there's child porn.

Also, there are a lot of kids who are being put on TikTok to monetize their existence (and Minnesota is seeking to BAN this!)

There are videos of kids being made to do suggestive things by their parents, but not apparently so, and kids are most definitely going to copy that for the attention until some adult has some serious conversation about what that with them. There's nothing wrong with them having adult role models, or even with some kid trying out a walk they saw a cartoon character doing from time to time, but doing so on a public platform in front of a whole internet full of adults is skeevy as fuck.

I don't really think we should allow any image of a real child to exist on the internet, and TikTok is WAY too big and unresponsive to such issues.

Once again - when Jarhyn and I are in 100% agreement, y'all should probably take a step back and think a bit harder.

You guys want to take away my bestest friend.

While I see your point I believe that's an impossible objective.

I could see a rule that the system can't recommend any video in which a child plays a prominent role.
