Why it even extends to 12 year old girls:

“Debbie and I really do care for you and we sincerely want God’s best for you,” he wrote, referring to his wife, Debbie Morris, according to the emails. Robert Morris wrote that he’d long ago confessed his sins to Clemishire’s father and believed that he’d “obtained your forgiveness as well as your family’s.”

Why isn't that precious?

Morris ended his reply with a legal warning.

“My attorney advises that if I pay you any money under a threat of exposure, you could be criminally prosecuted and Debbie and I do not want that,” he wrote. “If you need more information, have your attorney contact mine.”

OOOOkay! If you go forward with your accusations you are a criminal. Because it is god's love isn't it? What a turd.

And of course it was all her fault:

I mean girls with icky body parts (that's a medical term for those of you wondering) are always the problem. I mean it's not our fault that we men can't control ourselves around your icky body parts. It's the way god made us. Isn't he wonderful?

Years ago, I recall a pastor at a fundy church in Charleston, SC, got up in the pulpit one day, and simply said, that a witch had cast a spell on him and that he would have to resign. That's exactly how he put it - motherfucker. He then got down from the pulpit and walked out the church to the stunned congregation. I recall the bullshit excuses people made for him to this day - it was all the woman's fault. He was really a good man. At least she wasn't a child.

fuck religion.

I saw that asshole interviewed on the news and he gave some bullshit excuse about not being "saved" at the time and the temptation of the evils of the flesh. But, this is nothing new. In fact sexual abuse of children, by both priests and pastors, as well as other church workers, like youth directors etc. is very common.

In the United States, more than 5,300 priests and other members of the clergy have been accused of sexually abusing children. California is the top state in terms of the number of reported clergy sexual abuse cases in the country.

According to a ProPublica data compilation, a total of 757 credibly accused perpetrators of clergy sexual assault had been named in California as of 2020. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles alone produced files that named 244 priests and other members of the clergy who had been credibly accused of abuse by 656 individuals.

Who Are the Most Common Perpetrators of Clergy Sexual Abuse?

Clergy sexual abuse is most often perpetrated by people who hold positions of authority within a church or religious organization. Perpetrators take advantage of the imbalance of power between themselves and their victims to convince, force, coerce or threaten them into complying with nonconsensual or unlawful sexual activity.

The most common perpetrators of clergy sexual abuse are:

  • Religious leaders
  • Priests
  • Bishops
  • Deacons
  • Ministers
  • Reverends
  • Rabbis
  • Imams
  • Nuns or sisters

What a finding. I was half expecting a rimshot. Who else you gonna list, the church custodian?

Custodians don't usually hold a position of authority, so hopefully not. Of course, with god, all things are possible. /s

God's love may feel wonderful, but sex is better.

It's not just churches. How about the children's safety on the internet? Have you ever seen the many anti-predator groups who go out catching child predators as shown on YouTube, all the time?
The types of people who prey on vulnerable children range from right across a variety of predators who hold down various job role and positions that they may have. This list is much longer than the list quoted above. Quite shocking when you're adding all these evil things together.

(Just thought to mention, to give a little more perspective, should someone mistakenly be mislead to think this is a "unique" thing only to the "religious")

This thread is about sexual abuse by the clergy.

Of course, we know these crimes aren't limited to the clergy, but pastors, priests, youth ministers etc. act as if they are on some kind of moral high ground, called by their god to teach moral values etc., making it more likely that parents will trust them to care for or be alone with their children. I think that is the point we are trying to make. Religion is often used as a way to harm innocent children and sadly, those who are high up in the chain of these religious organizations often cover up or don't report what's going on. We've seen this in both the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Church. There are probably more, but the crimes committed by those two groups have been public and covered by the news.

As far as I know, my childhood church never had any clergy who sexually abused children, but there were many things that I found to be emotionally abusive, like telling me that my Catholic and Jewish friends were going to hell to be tortured for all eternity. That's not the same as sexual abuse, but it's a sick, disgusting thing to tell a child or for an adult to believe, for that matter. Once again, God's love is so wonderful. /s

The Copeland video is very tough to watch. I knew he was a total roadshow conman, and how angry he got at the few reporters who get next to him -- but this footage shows a man who is just barely in control of himself. Some of his herky-jerky motions are bizarre and puppet-like. But it's those glowing, rage-filled eyes that get you. This is a man who's talking to Captain Howdy at night. And try to imagine the followers -- those who tithe to this guy's 'ministry' and find him spellbinding. (Although, in a number of shots, the camera man is three or four rows back, and you see a lot of empty seats.) You want to contemplate the weirdness and loss of reflection in devout belief? Watch a few minutes of Copeland, and realize that some people don't find him disturbing at all. He's an authority and a spirit-filled avatar. Yikes!! (There have got to be grandkids who hate this guy's guts because Gma or Gpa have given the bulk of their estate to this bizarro character. My boss back in the 80s could never hear Oral Roberts name without calling him Fucking Oral Roberts, because that's who ended up with a sizeable chunk of the family's net worth.)

WTF is the matter with this guy???

He seems to be capitalising on his own mental illness, delusions of grandeur, ruthlessness and the gullibility of his audience, putting on a performance that has made him a multi millionaire.

Is this an American only "thing"?

Nah, we have our own crop of evangelists.

The problem is the assumption by Christians that they have a moral high ground superior to people like us atheists,, yet are as corrupt as anyone. And insists we should be like Christians.

No better example than the RCC who thinks it is above civil law. And a slew of Ame can CXhristian icons going back many decades.

I have liatend to reports on a Nigerian Christianleader, the same old sex abuse.

While it is not unique to churches, there are three things for you to consider: (1) positions/jobs/titles that get a person close to children is something that is attractive to predators and religion is filled with that; (2) organized religion sets up a hierarchy with authority figures and power can be corrupting or also attractive to people who already have corrupted minds; and (3) Organized religion sets up a defense of these predators, a network, if you will, covering for each other and spreading propaganda that they are being targeted merely because they are part of the one true religion--that's how you know all the priests are innocent, you see--because the religion is being targeted.
