Speaking of Worst Floods, here in the Kingdom 2025 isn't looking too bad for the Ping River -- although a few days ago rainfall became heavy here in New City -- but I happened on this page on the website of one of Bangkok's English-language dailies. I was intrigued for several reasons:
- It's the first time I've been offered a choice of Male or Female narration. Both voices are obviously computer-generated. The "Male" doesn't know about leaving pauses between words. (Four voices are offered altogether: Both English and Chinese -- but not Thai? -- are available.)
- Both Male and Female pronounce Thailand's major river (the Chao Phrya, pronounced "Jao Pai-ya") as "Chao Frai-ya." Yikes!!
- We're approaching the critical months when the dryness of the Central Thailand plain cannot be guaranteed. The Sirikit Dam, which collects water from the Nan River is at 83% capacity; the Bhumibol Dam collecting from the Ping is at only 63%. I'm sure the present government, if any, has learned its lesson from the catastrophic floods of 2011, and is now using these giant flood-control structures for ... flood control
