What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

my list of very favorite movies, I see that almost NONE of them have any flashbacks at all!
You will hate 'Memento'
Not flashbacks but there is a series called Counterpart which is similarly maddening. It took me all of the first season to train myself to first recognize which world they were in.
I would like to watch Counterpart but I’m not prepared to pay Amazon any more money.
I'm not on Prime. Did they latch it to Prime now? I bought this some years back. I don't buy/rent anything from Amazon now.

Andor, midway through season two. Show is interesting, but feels more like a series of films packaged as a tv show. Almost like they were a bit nervous about the show surviving and decided to skip to the notable points from a larger script. But at the same time, other parts feel like filler and are nonsensically inserted, like most of the stuff with Saw Gerrera, a character that appears to have a lot going on, but almost nothing said about him (unless he has more stuff from other series to work from?). And the plots can be a bit silly.

By far, it is much better than the third sequel, but it struggles for me to remain fully coherent.

King and Conqueror, 7/10; Streaming on Amazon Prime this dramatization of the events leading up to the famous Battle of Hastings in England 1066. The eight part series outlines the paths of the two protagonists Harald Godwinson and William, Duke of Normandy who claim the throne of England that culminates on the battle field of Hastings. Eight episodes is too long. Some things are drawn out just to pad the show I think but overall it was a decent series and very interesting. Historically there was of course some artistic license but fundamentally it was reasonably true to historical events. Some decent battle scenes were thrown in. The acting performances were good and the scenery was pleasant.

Welcome to Derry

What a bummer this one is. So much time and money put into such a crappy product. I don't need to be hit in the face with social issues scene after scene after scene. It, the book the series is based upon, certainly explores race-related issues, but it's not the entire f'ing book.

Yes, black people were treated poorly in the 1950s and well before and beyond that. All but the most ardent racists know it. Thus, in this series it's appropriate to cover it. However, a good 75% of the show is dedicated to this theme. When you throw in the fact that a portion of it also covers Native-American discrimination, you don't have a horror series, you have an ongoing political screed.

I love horror because when it's good, it lends itself to so many themes and ideas. The Witch, while not a series, explores history, religious beliefs and oppression of women and children through paternal tradition, but not at the expense of story telling, acting, writing, atmosphere, tension and dialogue. OTOH, this series takes a social issues baseball bat to the viewers head for most of each episode.

I absolutely agree with the social positions the show takes. I also love my homemade lasagna, but I don't want it stuffed down my throat until I until I'm suffocated by it.

3/10
