Welcome to Derry
What a bummer this one is. So much time and money put into such a crappy product. I don't need to be hit in the face with social issues scene after scene after scene. It, the book the series is based upon, certainly explores race-related issues, but it's not the entire f'ing book.
Yes, black people were treated poorly in the 1950s and well before and beyond that. All but the most ardent racists know it. Thus, in this series it's appropriate to cover it. However, a good 75% of the show is dedicated to this theme. When you throw in the fact that a portion of it also covers Native-American discrimination, you don't have a horror series, you have an ongoing political screed.
I love horror because when it's good, it lends itself to so many themes and ideas. The Witch, while not a series, explores history, religious beliefs and oppression of women and children through paternal tradition, but not at the expense of story telling, acting, writing, atmosphere, tension and dialogue. OTOH, this series takes a social issues baseball bat to the viewers head for most of each episode.
I absolutely agree with the social positions the show takes. I also love my homemade lasagna, but I don't want it stuffed down my throat until I until I'm suffocated by it.
