What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

my list of very favorite movies, I see that almost NONE of them have any flashbacks at all!
You will hate 'Memento'
Not flashbacks but there is a series called Counterpart which is similarly maddening. It took me all of the first season to train myself to first recognize which world they were in.
I would like to watch Counterpart but I’m not prepared to pay Amazon any more money.
I'm not on Prime. Did they latch it to Prime now? I bought this some years back. I don't buy/rent anything from Amazon now.

Andor, midway through season two. Show is interesting, but feels more like a series of films packaged as a tv show. Almost like they were a bit nervous about the show surviving and decided to skip to the notable points from a larger script. But at the same time, other parts feel like filler and are nonsensically inserted, like most of the stuff with Saw Gerrera, a character that appears to have a lot going on, but almost nothing said about him (unless he has more stuff from other series to work from?). And the plots can be a bit silly.

By far, it is much better than the third sequel, but it struggles for me to remain fully coherent.

King and Conqueror, 7/10; Streaming on Amazon Prime this dramatization of the events leading up to the famous Battle of Hastings in England 1066. The eight part series outlines the paths of the two protagonists Harald Godwinson and William, Duke of Normandy who claim the throne of England that culminates on the battle field of Hastings. Eight episodes is too long. Some things are drawn out just to pad the show I think but overall it was a decent series and very interesting. Historically there was of course some artistic license but fundamentally it was reasonably true to historical events. Some decent battle scenes were thrown in. The acting performances were good and the scenery was pleasant.

Welcome to Derry

What a bummer this one is. So much time and money put into such a crappy product. I don't need to be hit in the face with social issues scene after scene after scene. It, the book the series is based upon, certainly explores race-related issues, but it's not the entire f'ing book.

Yes, black people were treated poorly in the 1950s and well before and beyond that. All but the most ardent racists know it. Thus, in this series it's appropriate to cover it. However, a good 75% of the show is dedicated to this theme. When you throw in the fact that a portion of it also covers Native-American discrimination, you don't have a horror series, you have an ongoing political screed.

I love horror because when it's good, it lends itself to so many themes and ideas. The Witch, while not a series, explores history, religious beliefs and oppression of women and children through paternal tradition, but not at the expense of story telling, acting, writing, atmosphere, tension and dialogue. OTOH, this series takes a social issues baseball bat to the viewers head for most of each episode.

I absolutely agree with the social positions the show takes. I also love my homemade lasagna, but I don't want it stuffed down my throat until I until I'm suffocated by it.

3/10

The Beast In Me.

Good cast and good acting, good story, and just good. 7/10

I like Clare Danes a lot but I wish they had taught her more than that one expression in acting class. 🙁

I really like the original, British, version of Ghosts.

US remakes often miss it, for me, but this one adds enough value to be very good in its own right.

They made an Aussie version and now I'm sad.

I just finished this recently. I give it 6/10. The first episode was hard going and very annoying. There were some good cliffhangers that kept things interesting. But Clare Danes acting was grating at times.

Yes, as much as I like her (she was great in Homeland), I agree. But I should say I spelled her name wrong. It's Claire, not Clare.

Time Tunnel 2002 (no info on IMDB)
Unaired pilot
Never went to series. 8/10 better than origional series.
Origional went to famous events, made sure nothing changed. Boring.
New version is based in an alternate timeline where things HAVE changed.
(first change revieled: US has 49 states. NJ split between PA and NY)
Background: An experiment on Cold Fusion (using a tunnel) causes a time storm weaving through the past, anchored to their tunnel in the present.
People in the facility at the time of the accedent are the only people who remember the origional timeline.
They send a team of 6 back to restore the origional timeline (if possable) and prevent additional changes.
Also plays hommage to the 'Grandfather Paradox'. The main charicter runs into his grandfather on a WWII battlefield and has to wrestle with
staying on mission or saveing granddad.
Episode mission: preventing a 1500s plague from resurfacing in 1940s.

I'm half-way through the 6-episode miniseries Sara: La donna nell'ombra (Sara: Woman in the shadows). It's an Italian detective story; I watch it on Netflix with English voice and subtitles. (Is it available on USA Netflix?) It gets only 6.3 IMDB but 80% R.Tomato -- I THINK that means reviewers liked it better than the general audience did.

It lacks thrills or action, but has interesting characters, complex (almost confusing) story, and fun dialog. -- My genre! If the final episodes don't disappoint, I'll give it 7.6. I agree with the first review Google shows:
Fresh score. Considering the kind of 'content' that Netflix usually churns out, Sara: Woman in the Shadows is definitely watchable. The plot is quite intriguing; the main character is worth rooting for; and the supporting characters are equally interesting.

Percy Jackson And The Olympians

I started watching the first season on Disney+ and I thought it was surprisingly good.

The second season, not so much

Watching the midnight mass from the Vatican. Don't know how it started (we're not Catholic), but we watch every year and offer up comments.

What a change from last year! Young (?) energetic Pope moving through the ceremony like a man on a... mission I guess. Lovely singing voice, though. Last year it was so obvious that Francis was fading fast and they'd built the ceremony around having him do as little as possible.

But that baby Jesus in the manger...what yard sale did they pick that up from? It looks both cheap and weird.

I just hope the US President isn't watching. He'll be super jealous of the fact that the Vatican has way more gold than he could ever have.

Offer up comments in an MST 3000 kind of way?

I am watching Breaking Bad for the first time.
Nobody told me that Walter White was the alter ego of Ned Flanders.

Let me repeat my love for Sara: Woman in the shadows. I'll guess most will not be impressed with it -- it just happens to fit my tastes very well.

Two complaints (neither is a spoiler):
(1) This has the familiar plot of a super-sleuth coming out of retirement to help a friend. BUT there needs to be a retirement story: Was she raising a family? Enjoying a tropical island? AFAICT we're never told what Sara has been doing for over a decade.
(2) About five characters die or disappear during or before Episode 1. Some appear later in flashbacks, but these bearded Italians look about the same to me! (Perhaps if I watched with original (Italian) voice they'd be easier to distinguish.)

I watch Korean drama with Korean voice, not understanding a word. But those are slowish soap operas. I need the English voice for a fast-paced detective story.

Netflix has a "If you liked Sara you might like ___" feature I've never used before. But I clicked and almost gave up after the first several recommendations got lousy Tomato scores. But then Dept. Q appeared with very high ratings. Starting it now ...

Tell us what you think about this (slightly too slow-moving?) epic! Many, including myself, rate it G.O.A.T.

(Google shows Ned Flanders in Simpsons? I'm the one American who has never watched a single episode of that series!)

Agreed. A lot of people fawned over this series. I've tried several times now to get into it, but I never come back to it. The premises are interesting and so are many of the characters, but somehow it misses the boat. It's a show that should be good, but it's hard to put my finger on why I don't find it interesting.
