Split New York City Mayoral Race

To notify a split thread.
Whenever Derec says an organization is extremist I look it up and find out that he’s wrong.
Have you really looked into them and think that supporting Islamic terrorism is does not make them extremist?

How a pro-Palestinian campus group became a national lightning rod

In the days after the Oct. 7 terror attack, the national wing of SJP came under fierce scrutiny for a five-page “toolkit” document distributed to campus chapters. The document referred to the deadly assault as a “historic win for the Palestinian resistance.” The “toolkit” also suggested talking points for SJP chapters, such as: “We as Palestinian students in exile are PART of this movement, not in solidarity with this movement.”

This is related to how you and your Ilk on here refuse to condemn even the most toxic DSA politicians like Adam Hamawy and Avila Chevalier. They are part of your tribe, so they must be defended no matter what, right?
You're fighting a losing battle here.

Atrocities by Muslims and decades of terrorism = good.

Self defense by liberal democracy = bad.

Spineless Democratic Party allowing itself to be co-opted by the DSA = good.

Calling out the DSA for being deeply unpopular and thus unable to win elections based on its own policies and thus having to latch itself onto the DNC like a venomous succubus = bad.

If the denial of human rights e.g. women and LGBTG is oppressive;

Then a nation that persecutes the above groups specifically because they are who they are must be oppressive.

Therefore, Islamic groups, e.g. Hamas are oppressive.

So why is there such a moral and philosophical disconnect on the part of the extremist left when it comes to Islam?

I don't know... well, I have a pretty good idea of why, but there's paper thin plausible deniability supported by bad faith dishonesty, so it's not worth addressing.

Mamdani's NY government discovered that DoorDash systematically didn't count deliveries so they could pay their drivers less: a blatant case of Wage Theft.
They forced a settlement in which DoorDash will have to pay double what they owed, and drivers will be receiving their money automatically.

instead of bankrupting the City, Mamdani has just provided a $131.5m windfall.

Amazon is next in the crosshairs, with its practice of abusing and underpaying subcontractor drivers.
Unless I'm missing something, the "windfall" goes to the Doordash drivers (and their lawyers not doubt), not to the city.

DoorDash ‌will provide nearly $115m of ‌relief to about 264,000 workers, whom it calls Dashers, with a median payout of about $48. It accepted a $16.7m ‌civil fine.
That averages to about $435 per person... which implies there were a small group of people that got royally hosed if the median is $48! So the Mamdani Admin helped get $115 million to "Dashers". And to be fair, if you live in NY and someone screwed you out of $50, most likely never going to see it. The fact that there was follow through, likely for the power Dashers that went down to the less than Dashing is actually quite nice and unexpected from a municipal government.
Even if the "windfall" did go to the city, it seems kinda like a drop in the bucket given the city is looking at a budget deficit for future years in the neighborhood of $10 billion.
Yup, every cloud has some very dark parts to point at. Mamdani isn't getting the Nobel peace prize here, but this is a good thing.
You left out compensation for the lawyers. They usually take a pretty good chunk off the top in any settlement (30 - 40%, if not more).
Oh no, god forbid professionals get paid for their work. Law firms certainly don't incur costs via employee salaries, taxes, leases, massive discovery expenses, and years spent learning to be competent in their profession.

How about this: you go to law school, pass the bar exam, and then practice law for years until you become capable enough to handle the above described required work AND do it at cost. But since lawyers don't deserve compensation, maybe you can do it for free.

Just think of all the agonizing hours and neglect of your emotional health, and the money you won't make.

"Hi, do you do pro bono work?"

Potential Client: Hi, I need a lawyer that works pro bono.

You: I would love to take your case but I couldn't afford my bar fees, so my license has been suspended.

This is just fucking stupid! I'm tired of people trying to use terrorism and the victims of it as political points.
Spineless Democratic Party allowing itself to be co-opted by the DSA = good.
Co-opted? Most of the DSA candidates are losing.
Calling out the DSA for being deeply unpopular and thus unable to win elections based on its own policies and thus having to latch itself onto the DNC like a venomous succubus = bad.
It is more the reactionary bullshit that is being questioned. Derec has a godly level of awareness of every bad thing a person with colored skin has ever done in the US. Some person of questionable history getting a street named after them in Decatur? Derec is going to know who, what they have done, their criminal background.

Why don't you castigate Adam Hamawy and Avila Chevalier?!

We (liberals, left-leaning moderates, moderates, centrists) don't even know who these people are! We aren't on DSA's mailing list. We aren't particularly in the know on their platform. I know so much more about the Socialists at the turn of the Century in the US than today. The one thing these people get right is that life is hard. They don't get the solutions quite right as they lack the necessary pragmatism regarding how money works.

Well, they are extremists. That kind of speaks for itself. Extremists have a tendency of being under-exposed to certain realities and truths. Don't investigate things fully. Extremism is always founded on something that makes sense, but then it becomes exploited to a point of unrecognizability and things get silly.
I don't know... well, I have a pretty good idea of why, but there's paper thin plausible deniability supported by bad faith dishonesty, so it's not worth addressing.
You want to cry out anti-Semitism. But it isn't anti-Semitism. One day, people are going to understand that far left anguish is over Israel Government policy, not "the Jews". That'd be the far-right wing. Both thought patterns can be grounded in the same lack of rational or critical thinking. There are certainly far leftists that are anti-Semitic, but it is far from common even amongst them and people angry at Israel need to be talked with, not painted as Nazis.

Atrocities by Muslims and decades of terrorism = good.

I have been posting on Internet Infidels and its spin-offs for over 20 years. In all that time I have only encountered one poster who called terrorism committed by Muslims good, a few who quibbled over what makes something an atrocity, and only a handful who regularly defended human rights violations.

I don't know who you've been talking to, Colonel Sanders, but I suspect you are inserting content into people's posts that doesn't belong there.

Self defense by liberal democracy = bad.

Says who?

Spineless Democratic Party allowing itself to be co-opted by the DSA = good.

Calling out the DSA for being deeply unpopular and thus unable to win elections based on its own policies and thus having to latch itself onto the DNC like a venomous succubus = bad.

Criticizing political factions is how politics works. Arguing about which factions deserve criticism or praise, and why they deserve it, is normal.

If the denial of human rights e.g. women and LGBTG is oppressive;

Then a nation that persecutes the above groups specifically because they are who they are must be oppressive.

Therefore, Islamic groups, e.g. Hamas are oppressive.

So why is there such a moral and philosophical disconnect on the part of the extremist left when it comes to Islam?

Why are you conflating Hamas with Islam here? Do you think every follower of Islam supports Hamas? What about the Muslims who support Fatah? What about the ones who literally fought Hamas in the streets to prevent Hamas' takeover of Gaza? What about the Sufi? What about the Muslims in Israel, the US, and elsewhere who wish Hamas would hurry up and die already because they want a progressive, human rights supporting party to supplant the terrorists?

I don't know... well, I have a pretty good idea of why, but there's paper thin plausible deniability supported by bad faith dishonesty, so it's not worth addressing.

Bad faith dishonesty is always worth addressing on this board.

Got any examples?

It is more the reactionary bullshit that is being questioned. Derec has a godly level of awareness of every bad thing a person with colored skin has ever done in the US.
The bullshit here is the baseless aspersions you are casting. It's about DSA's extremist policies and the anti-western attitude many DSA cadres have - some of them informed by their 3rd world cultures.
But to reduce these things to skin color is facile, especially when somebody like Mamdani himself doesn't even have particularly colored skin. If he shaved, he'd be indistinguishable from paisanos in Little Italy.
Some person of questionable history getting a street named after them in Decatur? Derec is going to know who, what they have done, their criminal background.
Given that Decatur is practically next door, I do not see why I should not stay informed about local politics.
Why don't you castigate Adam Hamawy and Avila Chevalier?!
We (liberals, left-leaning moderates, moderates, centrists) don't even know who these people are!
Ignorance is not a virtue! We've discussed them in the 2026 Midterm thread when the NJ and NY primaries were happening, and now you claim to know nothing like some latter day Feldwebel Schultz.

They are shoo-in future congresscritters in ultrasafe D districts and they are both very extreme. DNC should not have allowed either of them to run in Dem primaries. Especially not Hamawy who was an associate of the Blind Sheikh, the Islamist responsible for the first WTC bombing.
With Hamawy there is another glaring issue - he got the nomination with <30% of the primary vote. That is very (small d) undemocratic.
We aren't on DSA's mailing list. We aren't particularly in the know on their platform. I know so much more about the Socialists at the turn of the Century in the US than today.
If we take this at face value, why aren't you better informed? It's not like they are a fringe party doing their own thing that therefore can be safely ignored. No, they are running a hostile takeover of many Dem nominations.
The one thing these people get right is that life is hard. They don't get the solutions quite right as they lack the necessary pragmatism regarding how money works.
They are not even in the right neighborhood. But you are talking here about their economic policies only. Their support for Islamic terrorism against Israel, and connections people like Hamawy have with terrorists against the US, should disqualify them altogether.
You want to cry out anti-Semitism. But it isn't anti-Semitism. One day, people are going to understand that far left anguish is over Israel Government policy, not "the Jews".
It is about "the Jews". If they don't believe that the only Jewish state has the right to defend itself against Islamic terrorism, and otherwise hold Israel to a different standard than they would any other country in the world, then that's antisemitism no matter how much they want to hide behind words like "antizionism". Same goes for excusing Arab imperialism and colonialism. Why are Jews from Poland or Yemen who settled in Judea in say 1920s and 30s "settler colonists", while Arabs from Yemen or Lebanon who settled in Judea in the 1920s and 30s "native"?
There are certainly far leftists that are anti-Semitic, but it is far from common even amongst them and people angry at Israel need to be talked with, not painted as Nazis.
At least you acknowledge that there are far left antisemites. They also tend to be anti-west.

Why are you conflating Hamas with Islam here?
Because Hamas literally stands for Islamic Resistance Movement. Political Islam is at their very core.

This is happening in NYC:
ADL said:
The January 8 demonstration outside of Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills in Queens, New York, was ostensibly a protest of an Israeli real estate event taking place inside the synagogue. It quickly devolved into calls to “Globalize the Intifada,” shouts of “Long live October 7th,” and most notably, a chant declaring, “Say it loud, say it clear, we support Hamas here!”
Pro-Hamas Chant at Queens Synagogue Protest Signals Further Normalization of Terror Rhetoric
Do you think every follower of Islam supports Hamas? What about the Muslims who support Fatah?
There are also Fatah terrorists. During the 2nd Intifada, Fatah maintained two terrorist wings - the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which still exists, and another one called Tanzim. One of the Fatah terror leaders, sentenced to five life terms, is Mahmoud Barghouti (scion of the prominent Barghouti clan which produced some other well known terrorists including Abdullah and Nael, who had joined Hamas instead).

And by the way, 10/7 wasn't a Hamas-only operation. No, other Palestinian terror factions joined in.

I disagree.

That question is worthy of its own thread, so I made one here.

Dude, lighten up. I did not bad mouth lawyers are remotely suggest they shouldn't be paid for their work. I brought them into the equation as they and the DoorDash drivers will be receiving the settlement money, and not NYC as Ziprhead seemed to be implying. And also to redress Jimmy Higgins' computed payout average to DoorDash drivers of $435 per person. Perhaps the way I said "...take a pretty good chunk off the top" could have been more phrased more delicately, but that doesn't make it untrue.

I implied nothing. Take it up with the Guardian. It was their words, not mine.
You said,

Those words I quoted above are not in the Guardian article that I could find. They appear to be your personal interpretation of the article.

Perhaps its clumsily worded, but you're insinuating that Mamdani is adding $100+ million dollars to the city's coffers, instead of bankrupting the city with (presumably) reckless spending and mismanagement. The $100+ million goes to specific individuals, not the City itself.

According to reports I’ve seen, over $115 million goes directly to the drivers who don’t need to file a claim.

I apologize. You are correct. But I didn't write it. It's a C/P from a post elsewhere and I forgot to put it in quote tags. Again, my apologies.

The lawyers don't get paid by taking a chunk of the back wages owed the employees. DoorDash would have to pay that separately under a legal rule called "fee-shifting" provision.
